As some of you may already be aware, my Eliza has had a bad infection for a while now. She has been on Septrin for 2 weeks now and although her urine now looks clear, it still contains blood. However, the vet has just said that although there is still blood, there is no nasty bacteria so the infection is clearing. My questions are: :-
1) Will she be OK being on Septrin for yet another week?
2) She has had some this morning, however, we are going away today until Sunday and leaving the pigs with our neighbour. There is no way he will be able to give her her antibiotics so will she be OK without them until Sunday?
3) He said that if it doesn't clear, we will have to re look at the situation which has worried me as I don't understand what more they can do and money is a bit tight.
To make matters worse, after 2pm, I shall be without the internet until Sunday :(
Thank you in advance xx

I would try to continue the septrin; however after a break you will have go for a full course again, I think. As I know only too well, cystitis can be VERY tough to clear!

All the best to Eliza!

Septrin for 2 weeks is a course in itself so I would stop now and not restart the treament. Septrin will eliminate the infection but no the underlying problem which is probably bladder stones. Put her on Cranberry Juice.
Blood in the urine does not, of itself, indicate an infection.
If she has sand/stones in the bladder these will have caused the bladder wall to become inflamed, cystitis, which will cause bleeding.
I would take an xray to check for stones and treat accordingly. She may need an anti-inflammatory drug, such as Rimadyl to reduce the inflammation.

Thank you for your advise. She had an x ray a few weeks ago and there were no stones, sand / sludge. The vet has said that there is no bacteria in her urine (anymore). Her urine was an awful red / orange colour but that has now stopped and her urine is once again clear. I'm confused :(

As I said the inflamed wall of the bladder will bleed, I suggest a course of Rimadyl.

So sorry to hear Eliza is still presenting urinary problems. Is she okay otherwise, weight, eating ok, pooping ok. I know how worried you are about your little princess and I'm sorry I cant offer any advice just wheeks of support from me and my piggies.

Aww Claire, sorry you are still going through it with Eliza, sounds as though she may be out of the woods with it though. Are you due for a visit to the vets with her. Maybe a course of different antibiotic would be beneficial, like alcesterpigs suggested. Hope things get better soon for you both. x>>

As the coloured wees have finally stopped, she should be out of the woods.

I hope that the trip went well with her!

Thank you all for your advise. I decided to take the pigs back to Nottingham with me so that I could carry on with the antibiotics. Eliza is fine and apart from the blood in her urine, there isn't anything else wrong with her. She is eating for England along with Eleanor, wee ing and pooping normally and she has gained weight. I am going to carry on with the antibiotics and see what happens on Friday. AP I shall mention what you have suggested to my vet if the blood is still present after this course of Septrin xx
