Edward is been neutered on Monday and I am trying to plan for it and was wondering if I should keep him in the cage I put him in when I clean him out (its the same size as his ) because his normal cage has a ledge with a ramp up it where I put his food and hay.Although he can easily get up and down the ramp he prefers to throw himself up onto the ledge from the floor and am worried he could hurt him self after the op,I could take the ledge off but it was a real pain to put on and I don't want to break it as he loves it. Do you think he would be OK in the clean out cage for a few days?

Ginger was Neutered on 4th Feb, so i can offer my advice as Ginger's op site is completely healed now but others may have done things differently.

Inside his cage he also had wooden platform for his food bowl but i took this out because i didn't want him to hurt himself or knock the stitches, mine is easy to come out but if yours isn't I'm sure he'll be fine in his other cage. Ginger also didn't have a ramp he has to jump on and off it, i replaced his with a fabric tunnel and bed.

To be honest Ginger didn't take well to GA so he didn't move around much at all and i had to hand feed him for a few days and syringe feed him water to drink as well as his medicines.

I kept him on towels for two days but because he was so unhappy i had a chat with the vet and she said i could bed him on soft meadow hay and change it daily, this perked him up in no time and started him eating again as he had a warm edible bed. I kept this up for about 12 days.

I think it's kinda trail and error as each pig reacts differently...

I wish you the best with Edward and everything goes well x

What's GA? I think I will put him in his clean out cage for a while Edward won't be getting stitches he will be glued but I don't want him to hurt himself. Any more tips on after care am worrying my self sick as it gets nearer by Monday I will be a complete mess at this rate!:(

Don't worry i cried straight after i dropped him off and was worried until he started to seem his usual self again, it's a very tough decision to make!

Um get him eating and drinking as soon you can, it will really help boost his recovery was what i was told to do. This meant i had to take the next day off work to hand feed him.

Here's some helpful links i related to..

Last year I fostered 5 boars during their post-neutering op period of 6 weeks. For the first 3 days I laid a puppy pad in bottom of cage but no blood so they were then on normal bedding plus hay. I was told to check for any swelling or redness but again everything OK. Only one slight hiccup was one still had a stitch 2 weeks later. Just too him to the vet who removed it for no charge. If you've got a vet who carries out lots of neutering ops eg if they do them for a local rescue you should have no trouble at all as it's a relatively simple op.

Oh a puppy pad that's a good idea.Didn't any of them try to eat it ? I use those for Edward and on top I put vetbed then fleece.

Surprisingly not, if I have any that do tend to eat the pad I just put some kitchen roll in & they eat that instead. General there's lots of hay so they eat that because it must taste better.

Mine have a crazy love of plastic to anything plastic they gobble up so puppy pads dont work for me, newspaper changed several times daily did though :-)
