After Neuter Help?!

Hi everyone,

We got our 6 month old guinea pig Gizmo neutered on Monday (So he could eventually start living with his Mum again),
Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem ...

After being neutered he was very down hill, he was pooing but barely eating.
We took him back yesterday after being very worried (he also had a very strong foul smell coming from him),
The vet fiddled quiet hard and all of a sudden a lot of wee came out onto the table, The vet said he'd had a full bladder and obviously hadn't weed since the operation (it had been about 28 hours).
She gave him another 2 injections (antibiotics and pain killer) and also sent us home with some oral antibiotics to give him, aswell as some liquid feed for him.

He appears to have perked up a tiny bit, but he's still not drinking from his water bottle or eating his nuggets (he's eating an occasional bit of hay aswell as some romaine lettuce leaves, and I keep syringe giving him water). He clearly has a full bladder again, I've tried giving him a sort of massage to try and get his bladder flowing but it's not doing anything and I obviously don't want to be pushing too hard. The only problem is the vet's takes almost an hour to get to, and with 3 young kids it's a bit hard.
The vet just simply said he's forgotten to go and how to use his bladder, and that to bring him back again today if he isn't weeing again.

I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem at all?

I am very sorry for your problems. Your vet doesn't sound very knowledgeable, as no small animal will simply "forget" to pee. It sounds like something has gone wrong and your boy is no longer able to and in major discomfort because of it. He needs urgently knowledgeable help as it can permanently damage his kidneys and kill him. :(

Also it is very important that you hand feed and water any piggy that it is off its food. If you leave it for more than a day, the guts can start closing down.

So sorry to hear you have had this problem.I have had many guinea pigs neutered and so far have never had any problem at all after the op.In fact they are so back to their normal selves you wouldn't know anything had been done.May I ask where about you are in Surrey?and what vet you used as there are a few savvy vets in this area.

I used The Ark vets in Ewell, Surrey as I read a review somewhere that they were good with guinea pigs.
I was so nervous about getting him neutered in the first place, but the vet assured me neutering was such a simple operation (but explained the risks of antithetic on guinea pigs).

Thankyou Wiebke, I wish I'd seen the map before I'd got him neutered :(

I'll give the vet another ring in a bit when I've got my youngest son down for a nap and see what she says, if she's not very helpful I'll try a different vets! Just so frustrating after already spending all that money on the Op. x
 
I am ever so sorry for your problems; but it sounds like something major has gone down wrong. It is not normal at all that a piggy cannot pee after his op.
 
If you don't get any satisfacton from the vet you have used then Anne O'Meara in Ewell ,who is on the vet locator, is excellent with guinea pigs and may be able to advise and help you further.
 
I have just spoken to the vet ... when I said to her I was very worried as he still hasn't weed, she sounded shocked and said it was very strange indeed that he still hasn't again. She asked us to bring him down and they're going to monitor him and have a look and see what's going on. So I've now sent my husband down to drop him off. I'm so frustrated with myself that I didn't look on here for a vet before, altho she has seemed good with him up until her 'forgotten to wee' moment yesterday. I just hope she can work out what's wrong ASAP. I'm so heartbroken, we sadly lost his sister a few weeks ago from some sort of heart problem she was born with, the last thing I could cope with is loosing him too :no:
 
Glad your vet is going to see your guinea pig at least she appears to be interested. So sorry you have already lost one so I do hope this little one will be ok.This is a very good informative forum and I am sure if you need any more help someone on here will reply. Please keep us posted on how you get on.

Good that your vet WAS shocked! I hope that they can help him. Fingers crossed! He needs at least a stent or something to keep the urethra open, which is for some reason blocked.

Please also write down that he has not eaten at all and urgently needs water and nutrients to stay alive.

I sadly don't know more than a vet, but I have been around guinea pigs for a good part of my life and know an emergency when I see one! I have also learned the hard way that many vets that more familiar with cats and dogs underestimate how important gut motility is for guinea pigs.
 
The vets kept him in but have been ringing me 3x a day to let me know how he's doing. They were gently squeezing his bladder to empty it and were hoping he would eventually empty it by himself (or if he hadn't by today they were going to be thinking of different options). They rang me this morning and apparently he's finally eating his guinea pig nuggets (they were having to syringe feed him, and he would also nibble on greens) and has weed a bit overnight and when they checked his bladder this morning it felt more empty, they're keeping him in again over night tonight but hoping aslong as he starts emptying his bladder more by himself then he can hopefully come home tommorow morning :D
 
Fingers firmly crossed! It is a good sign that he is eating by himself as that means that guts and plumbing are still working. I sincerely hope that he can pull through this crisis!
