This is a difficult topic, but my pigs are getting on in years, with health issues, and i have been thinking, what to do when one of them passes? I cant stand the thought of one of them being lonely. I have two brothers. Can i get another boar or does it have to be a girl? Which one should be neutered? Seems like sterilizing old pig would be dangerous but will he be frustrated with an unneutered female? Advice would be much appreciated:)

Yes you could get another boar to go with the one that is left. That would probably be the best option to avoid putting your boar through a neutering operation if he is older and with a complicated medical history. Getting a new friend via boar dating is the most reliable method of finding a piggy a new character compatible friend.

If you were to get a female, then your boar would need to be neutered. Generally a female wouldn’t be routinely spayed for the purposes of living with a boar because it is a much more invasive operation for a female.

Great advice there from @Piggies&buns , and if your boy is older then contacting local rescues to find other older piggies would be a good plan- older piggies are much harder to rehome, and possibly even they may have older ladies who have already been spayed for medical reasons like ovarian cysts, and who have also lost a friend. Good you are planning ahead for your old boys x

so can that boar be an adult? I just heard it might end in disaster to pair two boys together. Don't know what boar dating is? But thank you for the answer!:)

Yes it can be an adult. It is character compatibility that counts in making a relationship stable, rather than age - the two piggies have to like each other regardless of their age. Two boars can live together perfectly happily, you have two boars now!

Boar dating is when you take your piggy to a rescue centre and they then put your pig with other suitable boys. That way, your piggy chooses his own new friend which makes a more reliable bond. If you go out and just get another pig without it meeting your piggy first, then there is going to be a chance that they won’t like each other and won’t bond.

Boar dating is where you take your boy to a rescue to meet potential new boar friends, and only when you have a good potential match you bring the new one home. An older boy past his hormonal prime is probably easier to pair up than an assertive youngster brimming with testosterone with everything to prove! Many approved rescues in the UK offer a dating service, and if you contact them will try find a suitable match or several possibilities for your boy to meet x

thank you too pigglepuggle! But I live in a country where generally speaking, the only rescue animals are cats. I volunteered at a local animal shelter and there were only felines...

If you add your country and region to your profile, it will help other forum members see where you are and hopefully offer more specific local advice- as we are a UK based forum that is our default assumption, though we do have members from all over the world!
