Hi.
My guinea pig came home from the vet yesterday after have 2 abscesses drained. I have to give him antibiotics morning and night. I was just wondering if anyone new if I should be doing more for him and what to do.
They are under his chin and one still looks big. Is it just swollen? Or does he need to go back to the vet.

@VHayleyA1995 Were you shown how to flush them? Often abscesses are left open and flushed regularly so they can heal from the inside out.

It sounds gross but if you sniff it does it smell bad? Abscesses smell gross so you'll know if it's refilled by the smell.

They need to be kept on top of other they can be stubborn to heal so if you think it's not healing then taking him back to the vet would help.

Which antibiotic do you have? Zithromax is the best for abscesses so if you don't have that then it may be worth asking to swap.

The vet told me to squeeze it like a pimple. And that is it. - it doesn't Smell. But it seem like the only thing the vet has done is shave his fur and put stitches in. - he is on Enrotril antibiotics

@VHayleyA1995 I'm not sure how you can squeeze it if he's sewn it shut.

If you are worried or if it grows again please go back to the vet.

When mine had abscesses they were left open and I flushed them twice daily with Hibiscrub.
I was shown how to squeeze them to ensure all the pus came out and the vet wanted to check up on them every 2 weeks.
It wasn’t fun but everything healed well
Hope yours do too

I have decided to make another vet appointed asap as I am so unsure of everything. In the mean time I will try and flush it out I think its sewn open. Will have another look shortly. Thanks for everything

It doesn't really look to be sewn open.. There is a bit of a scab near his stitches though. I have some saline solution and will clean it. He is eating and is active. It doesn't seem to be bothering him

An update on Rex. He still is on antibiotics and has a check up tomorrow. But yesterday I had notice his wound had started oozing and the stitches have sort of came out. This isn't normal is it?

Oozing from any wound is not normal no. If you aren't sure of the instructions your vet gave it could be worth getting a second opinion from a cavy savvy vet. We have a vet locator in the top bar

He went to the vet. She cleaned it up. Everything was fine with it apart from he has lost 40grams so I need to feed him critical care food. The vet said he will call me in 2 days to let me know if he needs to come back to have it flushed.

@VHayleyA1995 Is he still on antibiotics? As it sounds like the antibiotics aren't fighting the abscess it might be worth asking for Zithromax when you next speak to the vet. It's very good against abscesses.
