Sorry if this doesn't belong here but I wasn't entirely sure where I should put it. Feel free to move it if you want.

I was just wondering if anyone knows how old you have to be to take an animal to the vets and pick up medication. Although my mum does eventually take me it is frustrating having to ask her again and again (she's quite nervous about the vets and the possible bills they can lead to) and would just be easier if I could take the piggies myself (public transport probably) but was just wondering if I'm old enough as I have a vague recollection of the vet at the surgery I did my work experiancde at saying you have to be eighteen to pick up any medicaton, which would be pretty annoying as I'd be back to asking my mum.

Just also thought I'd also quickly ask: do you take your piggies to the vets for yearly check ups? This is something I've been wondering about for a little while. We take the dog to the vet every year for her vaccines but haven't ever bothered taking the Guinea pigs unless they need it and to be honest I haven't seen any Guinea pigs in any of the local vets either.

dont know about the age thing sorry, i dont take my piggies for yearly check ups, just if i think something is wrong.

hi. I dont know about your vets but ours you have to be over 18 with written permission if age 16-18.

I dont take mine for yearly checkups.. isnt something i have ever thought about oops.. tend to just take them when unwell, although have taken them for checkups after illness.

as long as your gonna be responsible and follow the instructions i see no problem with you being responsible for your piggies...
ive never been asked and i personally look about 12 years old(even though I'm over 18 )... lol

if you go in there with the impression that you are responsible and committed to your piggies i doubt they will question you...

as far as yearly check... i dont see why not because piggies are prey animals which means they are notoriously good at hiding injuies and medical conditions... so yeh i think that would be a good idea...

hope this helps

If you/your mum rang your vets and asked you would know their policy - the receptionist should know, if they don't know ask them to find out and ring you back. If their is an age limit then ask whether your mum could give written permission for you to attend and collect.

Oh I never really thought about this. I guess you probably have to be 18, but it might depend on the medication? Maybe for non-prescription meds you can get them if you're younger, not sure.

Though some vets mightn't mind what age you are.

Ohhhh Ive never had any problems....but then again my family have been visiting the same vets since I was six! :) I've taken my dog to the vets on my own for vac./checkups/medicine since I was 14 and had no problems....hmmm....

About a year ago Panda was very poorly with a lung infection, she went drastically down hill, my daughter (14) was home but unfortunatly I was working so I phoned the vets and explained the situation and they were happy for my daughter to take her. Earlier this year I was poorly but Midge needed treatment so I rang again and explained but because it wasn't life threatening my OH had to go as well so I think it depends on the circumstances although for medication it has to be 16 yrs at my vets.

Thank you, good to hear I'm not the only one then :). I'll have to think about this one it'll probably depend on how they are health wise, if they do continue being as healthy as they seem to be then I might just keep it to when something seems wrong.

I'll ask the vet and if they need it i'll just get my mum to write me a letter but this shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about check ups, was just wondering because we took our dog the other day for her check up and it just occured to me we don't do the same for the pigs. Thank you :).

Thank you, yep this is one thing I do take pretty seriously so I can't imagine my behaviour would be much different from someone a couple years older, I'll just have to hope they won't have a problem. And lol I look a fair bit younger than I really am aswell which probably won't help. Definatly a point there with them hiding their injuries, I'll have to think about that one.

Sorry about the above my computer iffed up and I just kept clicking to try and get it working ... it didn't work :red.

I feel well silly, didn't even think to do that :red Seeing as the one we normally go to is quite far away (suppose to specialise in Shar-peis) I'm gonna call round to some of the good local ones and we'll hopefully find one that I can go to on my own. Thank you :)).

18 by law.

Is that to collect medication? Or acutally taking them as well? Thank you I had a feeling that is what it was.

Oh I never really thought about this. I guess you probably have to be 18, but it might depend on the medication? Maybe for non-prescription meds you can get them if you're younger, not sure.

This is what I thought it might be ..... hmmmm ..... hopefully they won't need too much medication but hopefully my mum will be able to pop in and grab it if I do. Thank you :)).
