So last Friday I took my Nutmeg to the vet for the second time in 3months because he hasn't been eating his pellets. Grass Yes, Hay Yes! and some Veg Yes! he has lost a fair amount of weight! On thorough examination (without x-rays) The vet found no obvious signs of any illness or medical issues, so sent him home with fibre plex, and something else to help keep his guts moving, to prevent stasis. I trust my vet 100 % she is very guinea pig savvy. On telling her I had to separate Nutmeg and Oreo a few weeks back, she suggested Nutmeg could well be suffering with depression, so suggested re-introducing them again. This went very well, and Nutmeg has started to take a bit more interest in his food again, but still not in a big way. Today when I was feeding them, I noticed blood in his cage, and on further inspection noted blood on his penis, and on a bit of the sawdust. It was fairly watery. I have just bought him inside for a further examination, and to give him his meds, and he peed blood on my sofa, again very watery, but the first bit of pee was not so watery, and looked more bloody than anything else. I am planning on taking him to the vets again tomorrow morning as soon as I am able to get an appointment, as I suspect he may have a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. What can I do for the time being to help him? If it is any constellation he is very active, bright eyed, and inquisiitve, so pretty much his usual self except the whole eating issue. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, even when weeing, although I did notice he ridged up a bit. I have had 100's of guinea pigs in my time, but have never had a UTI in any of my pigs as far as I can remember (May have this wrong), so know very little about the condition. Any help or advise will be appreciated. Many thanks. (Nutmeg is Bourbon's son the piggy who was given a lymphoma diagnosis this morning, whom I wrote about earlier today)

Thanks again!

This sounds like my late Donald. He seemed interested in his veg and hay but when I had him on close observation it was clear that he started eating with gusto but quickly stopped so wasn't taking enough in. Step in with syringe feeding little and often as he is likely not eating enough and if it is bladder stones he needs to be strong for the operation. Let me dig out Donald's thread for comparison

We have a trial of antibiotics for a possible UTI which start first thing tomorrow morning , but if things do not improve, he will be going to the vets again early next week, for a more thorough examination to see if he has bladder stones. He is slightly more interested in his food today, and is pooping as he should be. Other than his reduced feeding habits he seems happy, and energetic, and since tuesday he has actually put on a little more weight.
There has been no more signs of blood today in his pee, or if there has, it hasn't been visible to the naked eye.

If he is more interested in food and putting on weight then it could just be an infection so fingers crossed
