Hi, Can anyone help. We recently rescued two girls. They live with our other girl and one male, who have been together for 2 years and recently lost their cagemate. They have all lived together for around three months but one of the new pigs is chasing after our female piggie, there is lots of teeth chattering, the hackles go up and then there is a brief 'lunge' type attack, nothing too serious, and then it all calms down for a while. We have also noticed when the chattering happens the male pig puts himself between the two, and sometimes goes to the aggressor and kicks her, which also ends the attack on the female pig. We have no idea what is going on and would appreciate some advice.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

How old are the piggies involved, it would sound as if the hormones are kicking in and you have a younger girl trying to make her way to top pig perhaps? Your boar is playing the role of peace keeper.

How big is their cage? How often is this behavior taking place?

Sophie isalmost 4, she is one one being attacked and we believe Poppy to be around 2. There cage is in two parts with a part in the middle that can be used for sepeartion, the main cage is C&C and is 5 x2, then the other section is 5x2. It has a walk through so they have access to both sides all of the time. These episodes are happening around 5 times per day and usually starts with them staring each other out.

Does anyone know what I should do. Really considering taking the two rescue pigs back, but don't want to if we can sort it

Unless blood is drawn, or you notice the pig being harassed isn’t allowed to eat, is losing weight etc, then you just have to leave them to it. They’re likely just sorting out the hierarchy. I think sows can also do it when in season but I’m not sure (I have boars).
