while I was in the pet shop today getting my hay ect. I noticed a gorgeous peruvian ginger piggy,I had a look at her and the two pigs she was with, and it turned out that these were two males - they said that the pigs had only come in that day, thinking there was a possibility that this girl could be pregnant I decided to take her home.

I introduced her to my piggys and anytime any of them went near her face she would go for them,I was quite surprised at this behavior as most of my herd are nearly three times her size, and normally sows are fine together.

I have left her on her own, given her veg and nuggets and some hay,and a cozy cup and she seems happy enough on her own.

I was thinking then maybe today has been very stressful on her to have gone from her home to the pet shop to my home - could this be the reason that she is aggressive towards my gang?

All of my pigs are going to the vet on Monday for a check up, so she will be going to, I hope she wasnt left with the males for too long because she is very young and small!mallethead

sorry for the essay!

any advice on her behavior would be great!

Maybe she is frightened and scared, especially with all the moving about. I would give her a little time, she may just need time to relax into her new home.
Is she aggressive towards you?
Hope this helps :)

Pregnant females are better off on their own...
All the ones I have have been separated or kept with another pregnant sow that's due at the same time...

I would recommend you keeping her away from your other pigs... It is always worth while keeping new pigs away from your existing pigs for a minimum of two weeks to make sure the new pig isn't ill and couldn't make your other pigs ill...

Please read up some info on pregnant sows if you have never had to look after one before...

And I agree with you that she should have a check up... It's always a good idea to get them vet checked...

Hope she isn't pregnant...
And is she defiantly a she...? Being as she was kept with two males...
x

First of all ohmygoodness is she gorgeous! x)x)x) I agree let her settle in, be sure of her sex before you try to reintroduce (post pics of her business or ask the vet when you take them ) and fingers crossed that she isn't preg! Good luck. :)

Thats what I was thinking, maybe she is just so out of sorts from being moved around, she is quite happy on her own now,she is not aggressive towards me at all,she will happily sit in my hands.

I'm not 100% that she is pregnant, but she was in with two males, and there were another three guinea pigs in a different enclosure that came in with them too,six came in together,I really hope she is not!

I have looked after a pregnant sow before,so I would be ok! I will bring her in on Monday with the rest of them.

I do really hope she gets along with the rest of my herd at some stage!

thanks x

My goodness she is a very pretty girl! :)
Hope she'll be ok and isn't pregnant. Let's hope she will settle in ok given time.
Maybe she's cross because she was being harrassed by the males before and now she's just telling everypig to go away! :a19:

Hi! She is gorgeous and - after being with several males - probably pretty traumatised and feeling very put upon!

Depending on how long have been together on the transport and when her season is, she may be pregnant indeed. I don' think it will show for a time yet until she is at least halfway through her pregnancy.

We have lots of tips for pregnancy, diet, labour and baby care on this thread here: http://wheekers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=library&action=display&thread=7303
Please limit her pellet intake to 40-50g, as more can cause the babies to grow very big, especially if she has only one or two.

I am after finding the ad for the guinea pig - (I have named her ruby!) on a website that the breeder put up before she took the babies to the pet shop, both breeder and pet shop being in the same area and the ad says that they are between 10 - 25 weeks - now judging from the size of this little sow id say she is around ten weeks, and in the pictures on the ad ALL guinea pigs are in together!meaning she had been with males for 10 weeks!

I will keep her on her own for now,all my pigs are in the vet at half 9 in the morning so I will see what the vet thinks!

Thanks for all the advice - I will let you know what the vet says.

I really do hope she is not pregnant as she is only a baby herself!:(

The poor little girl. Maybe she had the boys going for her and so has started defending herself by attacking piggies that go near her. She may think that your girls want to mount her to and so she's wary and defencive.

I'd definitely keep her by herself for a while and then maybe hold another guinea pig in your hands near her but not next to her so she can get used to another piggy being close, slowly letting them get closer each time you take them out. She'll learn your girls aren't after her that way and hopefully calm.

poor little thing - the more I think of it the worse I feel for her,I found a little cut on her ear too :(

I will try this when I am introducing them again,I hope she is ok

Wow she is beautiful. I should think the poor little mite thinks everyone is against her. She will be fine when she realises she has a good home...x)

I took all my guinea pigs to the vet yesterday - all are fine :)

I found some healing bite marks on Ruby's back/bum, and the vet said to bring her back in a few weeks to see if she is pregnant.

She is wheeking a lot now when she hears the others, I do feel bad because she is on her own so I have had her out with me for awhile, she will happily sit on my lap.

I am going to weigh her a lot in the next few weeks to see how much she puts on.

Fingers crossed
