I just brought home two new piggies and the Peruvian has mites I think. I was checking her over and spread the fur on her back and saw little black things in her fur! They have an appointment at the vet tomorrow, is there anything I can do until then? The short haired piggie that came with her does not seem to have mites that I could find. Also I let them in the run with Kristoff and Tiana, just for about 5 minutes until I noticed the mites. I know rookie mistake not keeping them apart until after their vet appointment, I was just too excited and they all got along great, no teeth chattering or anything. They had been at the rescue for 3 weeks and she said she treated them for ear mites just in case because their ears were dirty. I’m an idiot, did I just give Tiana and Kristoff mites too?! I don’t know anything about mites, can dogs get them from guinea pigs? What kind of precautions do I take so the other pigs don’t get them? The two new girls are in my extra store bought cage so they are totally separated from the rest now.

Oh no! Ugh! I am sure Dr. Greenfield will know what to do! Maybe he can give you doses for your other piggies without bringing them in. Can you get a weight for all of them?

I would get treatment for Tiana and Kristoff too just in case. You will need to treat all piggies that have been in contact with the piggie with mites. Are you going to rename them?

Is the treatment oral meds or shampoo or both?

Oh dear :( Fingers crossed the vet can get to the bottom of it. It's usually treated by a course o f ivermectin spot on here in the UK.

Just got back from the vet, no lice or mites or any other nasty creatures and my new piggies are very healthy! Vet said the specks I see are probably dermatitis healing up as the specks were all about 1cm from the skin. Rapunzel was very matted when the rescue got her so I’m sure that caused some skin irritation. The vet said she is a coronet, (his favorite breed) so she may have gotten some extra attention from him :). 5F73E86C-7CFD-4B30-B146-84FF15BBF6F8.webp79B29C8D-81AB-47F7-A476-A385D0C3CBD1.webpMy daughter made sure they had plenty of hay to eat during their appointment, she likes to feed it strand by strand and watch it disappear into their mouth.18AFFB53-0159-461F-934A-250E028F0E7D.webp

Great news! Oh and very well behaved piggies! My piggies usually roam around the vet table whenever we took them!

They look cute. We have a coronet male, my personal favourite. Your looks like its had a bath and a blow dry, its coat looks in great condition lol

Good news.
How do you get hem to stay so still at the vets?
Mine are always trying to run away - even Merab who has decided that at her age she doesn't 'do' exercise
I’m not sure if they are just scared or really that calm, they are really calm when I have them out at home too. The vet and vet tech were really impressed with how good they were too, I guess I got a good pair :)
