It's been a while since I posted on here, but after a rather shocking late night discovery on woody's rear end I though I'd seek some advice ...

So I was just handling our 5 year old boar woody when I felt a lump on his rear ended - a softish lump which I initially thought was matted fur. I gave it a gently pull to try to separate it and I felt it kind of give, and underneath was this scary looking thing (sorry it's not pretty):

He didn't flinch at all when I essentially pulled the scab off it, and he's let me feel about at it without a grumble so I'm hoping it's not bothering him too much (he did have his eye removed last year though and then had to have it flushed out again this year and that didn't bother him either - tough cookie!), but it looks really nasty for him.

Obviously it needs veterinary attention and we will get him there asap, but until I do has anyone seen something like this before?

Thanks
Tanya

It looks like it could be an abscess to me, poor boy, looks painful. If it is an abscess then the recommended antibiotic is Zithromax, combined with flushing (like you have mentioned).

You could also try cleaning it tonight with a saline solution to prevent infection.

I agree with Helens treatment suggestions above &too think it looks like an abcess /infected sebacious cyst.

Does it smell? I think an Abcesses contents usually do smell rather strong!

Definite vet visit asap.

Fingers &paws crossed for him poor boy. Xx

I'd say an infection of some sort.
I'd get him to a vet for antibiotics and flushing.. And probably some anti inflammatory and pain killers. This is just my own personal opinion and from my most recent experience!

Hi all thanks for your replies, here's an update ...

Woody went to the vets this morning, she stuck a needle in the lump to check for pus but it was more of a solid like cyst rather than an abscess ... He was admitted for the day and the cyst was surgically removed.

He's back at home now and acting his usual self, so hopefully all is ok. Cyst has been to sent to the lab for testing to see what it actually is ...

Good news tht he's had it removed. Fingers crossed it's nothing sinister. Go Woody!

Best of luck, but good that it could be promptly removed!
