Hi everyone.

My name is Andy, I’m a long term lurker / learner and now first time poster!

My 2 girls, Lion and Tiger are nearly 6 months now. I’ve been feeding them handful of this as an almost daily treat

Timothy Hay 1.8kg | Pets At Home

They absolutely love it but my question is should I stop now as they’re 6 months old and I should be limiting their calcium intake.

Or is just the hays name just Alfalfa King and it’s good for them still?

If I have to stop it is there an alternative I could use?

They love the crunch of it I think and they make a beeline for the flower tops when I give them a handful.

And I think the light green colour catches their eye and they head for it!

They get and unlimited amount of a meadow hay as bedding and food and they also love Redigrass and a herby hay from my local garden centre which I spread around their hutch for them to hunt for.

Thanks for your time.

Hello.
That is just normal Timothy hay and is perfectly fine for them to continue to eat. Alfalfa king looks like the brand name.
I am not definitely certain, but I think readigrass should be limited due to its calcium content. Perhaps somebody more experienced will comment on that. (I am experienced with rabbits but new to guinea pigs!)

The alfalfa hay from Alfalfa King has a yellow stripe on the bag instead of the red one for Timothy hay. Confusing huh!

Yea it is confusing. I love buying this hay,its soooo tightly packed that it lasts absolutely ages ( the timothy one)

Damn.
So I’ve beem feeding them normal Timothy hay instead of the alfalfa hay they need at a younger age?!?

They won’t suffer any lasting health issues will they?
I guess alfalfa hay being high in calcium was good for bone strengthening etc as they were growing up?

I’ve done everything by the book with these as they’re my first pets.
I can’t believe I’ve fallen for it! I’d normally reaserch everything but this is a big fail!

I have never given any high calcium foods to any of my guinea pigs i have had from a young age, and all has been fine. Dont worry yourself. Theres probably enough in any veg you have given and your tap water if you dont filter it. I need to go check i havnt been using the akfalfa one now lol

From what I had been told (my own pigs being under six months when I got them) it is not entirely true that they NEED alfalfa (being a legume not a grass hay) under six months. Normal grass hay is fine for them.

I have read that too, dont worry. Sometimes you can research so much info that you forget to enjoy your animals and they become a project. I have given my old 7 year old pig high calcium food all of his life before i knew it was bad, and when he had an xray at about 6 years old for something else guess what. Not stones no sludge, even though he used to pee and leave white powder behind

So just to confirm, I’ve got the Alfalfa King with the red colouring on the pack.
This is just the normal hay that they can have all the time is it?

Yea should say timothy hay on it. Thats the best hay for fibre

Ha.
Yeah it says Timothy hay on it.

Every days a school day.

At least they’re happy they won’t have to give it up now I’ve asked you all.
I was nearing the end of the bag and limiting them to smaller amounts every few days.

A sort of hay cold turkey!
