Hi all,

As some of you may know, I have four boars who are all about 7 months old.

We have been alternating between using the Meadow Timothy Hay from the Range, and Alfalfa King Timothy Hay.

I know that alfalfa contains more calcium than the standard Timothy Hay, but that it is good for growing guinea pigs. I was wondering at what point would you decide to change from this hay to a less calcium based hay? I obviously do not want to encourage kidney problems. There are the occasional calcium type wees, but nothing sludgey or very grittery. They do tend to prefer this hay over the other, but are quite fussy and have phases with it.

If it helps, their weights are as follows;
Banana - 990g
Gilles - 830g
Scruffy - 810g
Snoopy 813g

Thanks in advance xox

Timothy hay is lower in calcium than alfalfa hay. I'm not sure about the brand that you list from the Range, but the Alfalfa King hay is timothy hay, and not alfalfa - 'Alfalfa King' is just the name of the brand.

A handful of alfalfa hay can be given to baby pigs who need the extra calcium, but most good nuggets will contain sufficient amounts of calcium for them anyway.

Thanks Jerrybelly, and bubbleandsqueak for your answers. I'll carry on with this hay then, as they really seem to like it at the moment!

Our piggies are not keen on this hay but I always keep a stock as find it good for any one of them if they are a little 'off' colour as it is supposed to help stimulate appetite.

Sally was not quite herself on Sunday and despite tempting her with her fave veggies etc. wasn't eating as gusto so vet visit planned for that afternoon.
I popped a small amount of this hay in her pen and she gobbled it up then within 15 minutes began eating as normal and has been herself since - irony or what but I'm never without a supply here.
Worth the extra few pennies...:)

We use this regularly, though it has been a bit too stalky of late but apparently there are lots of issues with hay at the moment. It is not alafalfa hay at all, that's just the brand name, is just Timothy hay.
