I've fed my piggies Alfalfa King for a couple of years now, and they still go crazy for this hay, I'm really impressed with the quality of it and it's one of the few hays my piggies will eat. However they seem to only go for the fluffy tops and leave most of the rest, I've noticed a lot of wastage with this hay despite how much they love it.

The only hay I've found that my piggies will eat most of and leave little waste is Burgess Excel Timothy hay with dandelion and marigold, they really love this brand, but it only comes in 1kg bags, if it came in bulk sizes I'd buy it forever, but it's just getting too expensive for my 10 pigs.

Anyway I've recently discovered bulk buying, I didn't realize how much cheaper it is to buy in bulk, I've spent years buying small bags from the pet shop, ouch! I go through about 20kg of hay every 2 weeks with my lot, so I need to buy this quantity, I'm just not sure if I should get 22kg Alfalfa King Timothy, or try my piggies with 22kg of Oxbow Western Timothy hay. I have never purchased Oxbow Timothy hay before, so I have no idea what it's like compared to Alfalfa King, is it better? Did your piggies like it more and eat more of it?

I know Oxbow is much more expensive than Alfalfa King, but if piggies seem to eat more of the Oxbow, then really that is more value for money than spending less on Alfalfa King and most of it getting thrown out... I'm just fishing for opinions from people that have used both of these brands, which you and your piggies preferred. I'm placing my order today and need a bit of help as to which brand to purchase, I'm still looking for the perfect hay for my bank account and my piggies health!

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Oxbow Timothy hay is loved in our house, it is expensive though. I would advise getting a small bag first of all to get it judged by those whose opinions matter the most... The furry bellied ones

I have both the Alfalfa King Timothy hay and the Oxbow Western Timothy hay. Quality wise they appear to be exactly the same really and look the same, infact if I put both in the piggies hay bag they would never know the difference but they seem to prefer the Alfalfa King just slightly more. They are really loving their new Burgess Timothy hay but I can only get it here in the 500g pack. I would maybe do what sport_billy suggested about the Oxbow and buy a small bag first to try because it is expensive especially if they are anything like my two when it comes to being fussy with their Timothy hay.

The two boys I've got don't seem to be too impressed with the Kingshigh so all the other hey Steve got two of them are Burgess and one is natures touch wild mountain high
Correction hey this dictation is stupid

Hey! I've used both Oxbow and Alfalfa King (In bulk) first of all alfalfa King is waaay cheaper and in my opinion better quality as with oxbow you get a LOT of dust. If you buy a small bag of Oxbow there will be no dust as in the small bags they are more careful but in bulk it's very dusty (it even says on the side it will be dusty)

I would definitely do this........Our two girls did not like Oxbow Timothy at all, I landed up composting most of it! Unusual I think. We haven't tried Alfalfa King so can't comment there I'm afraid.

Thanks for making this thread - think I might try the cheaper brand first when I get that far!

You can get a little bag of it from Pets at Home if you want to try it.

I used to buy the bigger bags of it from The Hay Experts online.
