Finally pushed the baot out to buy this from P@H. We were using Burgess Excel Fresh Herbage (timothy hay with dandelion and marigold) which our two boars like. Given that the Burgess is around £4.50/kg and the AK timothy hay was £7.50 for 1.8kg, I thought we'd try it out.

It's certainly very green and fresh looking. It smells very fresh and seems to be going down very well. That could be because they've never had it before and they like to change things are it could be very tasty. It feels like good quality hay so so far so good.

I'm not too sure if this hay is ok daily due to the contents - I maybe mistaken though mallethead and hopefully another member who knows more about it will advise.
We bought some for our boar who was really ill as it is good for convalescing/nursing and sick piggies but he wasn't too keen :(
Even the lucious American Timothy Western hay couldn't tempt him.
Our lot love Jollyes Meadow Hay - smells gorgeous and is a lovely soft, long stemmed hay. Makes their pens smell like a summers day ;)
Ah, just found this so must be where I got the info from originally:

The name is misleading, it's not actually alfalfa, it's Nevada Timothy hay but the company is Alfalfa Kings. :)

Ive just mine on Oxbow got all the different one for them to try but I might get some of this stuff aswell! :)

I use the Alfalfa Kings hay for my 8 pigs (they've been having it daily now for around 12months) - ive recently started to 'mix' it in with other 'cheaper' hays as it was getting quite expensive - i could use two bags of that over 8 days! and that was just putting it in their hay racks :{

I'm not complaining though - the more hay they eat the better :))

I buy this for my little ones and they love it. It is really good quality. :)

There doesn't seem to be a big difference in IMO between the AK and the Oxbow. They both look very good and seem very popular with the boys :)

I'd say my decision will be based on the price when I'm in the shop. They are very similarly priced but I think if you buy a big bag, the AK comes out fractionally cheaper at P@H. Our small pet shop doesn't stock either.

This may be a nother consideration because I've noticed that not all P@H stock the AK and sometimes the Oxbow is quite difficult to find. Our vet actually stocks Oxbow so for anyone in the Manchester area you can get this at Ashleigh Vet Centre in Whalley Range. FYI they can also order in Supreme Science Piggy Pellets which are excellent.

I've found the AK to be a lot less popular than the Oxbow. No idea why, as it looks nicer to me (but what do I know, not being a piggy!)

i have just been and got some ak timothy hay for my lot, £ 7 50 for a compressed bag, if it goes down well i will look on amazon to see if i can get it cheaper, does anyone else get this cheaper online?

Mine love it too...but they only get it about every third day as it gets a bit pricey with 5 greedy hay-loving mouths to feed! The rest of the time they have meadow hay.

Mine love it too. They go mad for it everytime i fill the hay racks with it. They get oxbow timothy hay as their staple and they love that too, but also love the AK.

Have you tried the AK oat wheat and barley hay? Mine love that too, you can get it from the hay experts.

If i could buy the AK timothy hay in bulk instead of oxbow i would, as its great quality and the piggys go mad for it.

AK does seem a bit dusty no?

It is a little dustier you're right. I think if you've got sneezers or piggies that aren't too happy with hay dust then the Oxbow is probably better. I think the AK is a little greener though and the smell is a little stronger so it may be a bit tastier but, again, there isn't much in it for me.

Those two links from Bailey and from Joey&Gizmo look really good. Do you know of the nutritional add-ons for rye / wheat & barley? Do you think it's ok for Biscuit's delicate bowels?

I ordered some Oxbow hay and found it much better than AK. Looks fresher - less dry. And the pigs seem to agree.:)

Needed some hay and didn't have time to order in so thought I'd give AK another go. Even less impressed than last time. Not a patch on Oxbow. It's dry (pigs drink a lot after eating) and quite tough.

I got this for my piggies to try them out on it, would they eat it no! :/
Then went back to the Oxbow orchard hay and they love it!

I feel mean! Non of my lot get fancy hay, just cheap hay from a bale! With 11mouths to feed I can't risk them getting a taste for the fancy stuff!

I don't blame you. I have four pigs to feed and that is expensive enough. Unfortunately I've completely spoilt my pigs, I tried them on a cheap bag of meadow hay and most of it got wasted. Would love to find a brand that was cheap and green that they would like.

I think sometime the expensive stuff is overated. Ive found a fresh just cut bale of hay from a local farm, nice and green and long stranded is far more appealing to my piggies. They went nuts for it every time and it smelt amazing. £5 for a huge bale, I couldnt ask for better. It may not have been timothy but the quality was unbelievable and they ate lots more of it, so it catch 22. Because the more they eat the better it is for their teeth.
Dont get me wrong though at the moment I'm on AK for P@H because I havent found a famers hay that I like at the moment as I have moved region. Although lAK is lovely and green its not very course or long stranded so I mix with not so good meadow hay to keep the little theethles nice and short :).

I buy top quality hay (it's got a beautiful smell and lovely and green) but I do mix in a bit of the AK twice per week. I notice they eat every single strand of it. I suppose a bit of a change is as good as a rest and mine really appreciate it, but I wouldn't feed it all the time.

I also feed Burns green oat hay twice per week - they also love that.

Variety is the spice of life ;)
