I went to PAH (again) to stock up on hay, but compared to last week with the shelves overflowing with hay, they had none. The only stuff they had was a tiny bag of -expensive- alfalfa, which I know you’re only really meant to use for babies and pregnant/lactating sows. The problem is I’m really in a pinch now because there’s no hay anywhere and it’s all I could get.

Is it okay to use with my boys? (About one and a half)
Would it be best to mix it through the remaining hay we had from the last bag? We do have quite a bit left over but we ideally wanted to get more before this Covid-19 situation gets worse and we’ll not be able to get out. The shops are barren, couldn’t get any food for the tortoise either which is not good, but she can live solely off veggies for now, until we can get some on.
 
The difficulty is the high calcium content. Even with sows I think they only get a small handful as a top up. I probably wouldn’t under the circumstances. Have you tried amazon, or are there any farms nearby where you could buy some bags?
 
Pets at home are getting stock in regularly. Their CEO sent a message yesterday encouraging people to only buy what they need but again it seems like some people are stock piling. I would probably ring them and ask when they next expect to get some in
 
The problem is, is no one can estimate how much is needed, so getting too much is working out better than not enough. Its all a huge mess

Well that depends on mindset to be honest and it's that kind of attitude that is causing the problem. I think people are more than aware of how much/how often they buy things like this and being told that it's coming in regularly should be enough to carry on as normal. Unfortunately if there are more people like you that will buy what's there even though they don't normally buy that much it will screw over the rest of us and animals will suffer as a result
 
I'm not buying more than I usually need. But it's clear from the the level of stock, people are
 
feeling guilty but I only got one spare bale. I think the advice for pets is to have two weeks worth of food and a months worth of any medications but that does require you to get more than usual and if everyone gets a bit more than usual it soon adds up to there being none left.
 
The lady at Pets at Home (who was very nice) said they’d be getting stock in next week or sometime soon so I guess I’ll just have to go back then and pick some up. Waste of some expensive alfalfa though
 
I've made myself look like I stockpile, but I was only mentioning why people are doing it, and it's because some are now in 12 week isolation. Sonrhosne

It isn't my mindset, but its evident that it is a mindset going round now. I'm not arguing or anything, I like you👍. I probably mis understood, stay safe🙏

The 12 weeks is still social distancing so can go out for essentials. Just not too often. I brought my usual bale of hay so that should last a fair while now. I'm lucky though as hubby will go and get more when we need it (hopefully the farm shops will still be open at that point)
