Just had him at vets and she lanced it, flushed it out and gave him a shot of anti-biotics. Poor wee man it must have been really sore it was the size of a golf ball. The vet looked in his mouth and said she couldnt see anything wrong there.

The girls are now fussing round and sniffing him, Blossom tried to lick him, dunno if she was trying to clean it for him rolleyes.

Got an app for tomo to have it flushed again, another jab, and a course of anti-biotics.

She said if it was something like his teeth or bones that was causing it, it may be that it will keep re-occuring. But if it was a bite or scratch that had got infected it would be easier to heal.

Is this right? And should I be asking anything else tomo when I go?

Sorry to hear that little Alfie is in the wars. I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience with abscesses in piggies but I would guess that the vet is right when she said if it's a bite/injury wound that has turned into an abscess then it should hopefully heal and that will be the end of it. Sadly if it is a tooth/jaw issue the problem may be on going, but hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon.

Good luck tomorrow, and if Alfie is put on a course of Antibiotics it is worth asking your vet for some pro biotic to help put some good flora back into his gut - I usually give this about an hour or so after meds, don't give at the same time or the bad bugs will kill off the good ones!

Keep us posted.

He is 18 months old.

Will ask the vet for pro-biotic also & keep you updated. He seems a bit more like his usual self, tucking into his veg and rumbling at the girls lol.

aww she is lovely and sounds a real character!

Definitely ask for Zithro-max (all one word, but the forum doesn't like it!). Not normally prescribed for pigs, but it is the best antibiotic for abscesses. Even if you have to sign a disclaimer, I'd definitely go down that route. xx>>>

Also, did you get any painkillers for him? If not, also ask for some Metacam.

Ive had chin absesses in younger piggies, sometimes they do reoccur. Baytril was pretty useless at clearing the absess and one actually burst.
I have my suspicions that its linked to teeth and inside the mouth. Theo got an absess then diagnosed with inflammed routes and Alvin he had a few problems with his teeth throughout his short life.
Theo has had his teeth filed once as well but the key to stop absesses in my opinion is to not give unlimited nuggets to ensure they are eating lots and lots of hay.
