Just got Alfonzo back from the vets, he was very happy to be home! He's had a munch on some hay and some apple so hopefully we won't have any worries there.

Senna seems pretty happy that he's home lol! Their cages are next to each other and she's been running about her cage, wheeking and barging things out her way and generally leaving a path of destruction in her wake. She's such a bolshy little thing now! A far cry from the guinea pig I picked up 2 months ago, frozen in fear and wouldn't leave her house. Can't wait to let them meet each other properly once Alfonzo is in the clear, they've been giving kisses through the bars :) (Senna is from the Glasgow 40)

So back to the original point - anyone have any advice on when he should be feeling back to normal? Anything to watch out for aside from the obvious (intake/output, redness, swelling etc)?

Hopefully, he will be back to normal pretty much straight away, but at least within a couple of days.
Here are post op tips: http://www.guinealynx.info/postop.html

Weigh him daily for the next week, then half weekly or weekly - but by handling him daily, you will notice any difference in heft pretty quickly. Give him a quick check daily to look out for any swelling etc. Any loss of appetite/weight loss/change in poos after two days (the first day after an op poos are often funny) should be investigated by your vet - it can indicate an infection or another problem like an abscess.

Unfortunately, you will have to wait another 6 weeks until Alfonzo is 100% to be with Senna. My Tegan is the surprise present from a supposedly safe, over 5 weeks post op boar (not one of mine), so it can really happen that late! It is going to be LOOONG 6 weeks, though!

Please check on him once during the night. In rare cases a piggy in pain can bite open the operation wound. Make sure that you have an out-of-hours number (you can get it from your vet's answering machine).

I'm going to sleep on the sofa next to his cage, have already stopped him bothering it once! Have an out of hours vet round the corner - Thanks x

We hope Alfonzo is back to his usual self quickly. The fact that he is eating is great. Sorry to go off topic but it's great to hear that Senna is doing so well too. The Glasgow 40 is very close to our hearts and we thank you again for alerting us all to the plight of these piggies. We have just returned 2 of the Glasgow 40 boars to Hutches Rescue after being fostered by us over the Christmas and New Year period.

Lisa & Ali...x

Aww I'm glad the op was a success and he's doing well.

I'm glad you asked this question as this information has been a help as my only boar is having the same op next Tuesday and I have googled and researched a lot too but this confirmed it all!

:)
