Hey guys come here and chat about everything to do about piggies ask for help, give help, say tips and great vegies for them! Anything about piggies post on here.

Well he was ok now he is gasping as in he is choking or hard for breath..the vet on phone said because hes pure bred its a genetic thing ..he might not make it..I'm holding him keeping him warm...He needs some good luck vibes.8...8...

Okay that's not good! Can you not take him for treatment? It might be something like a URI that can be fatal, but if treated with anti biotics could be okay. What age is you piggy? He really needs to see the vet if he is struggling to breathe, whereabouts are you? Maybe someone can recommend a vet, let us know how you get on, good luck xox

well the vet said theyres nothing he can do he knows of he said he can check on him if we wanted but he has no idea what he could do..he thinks *** his brother died..it might be a genetic thing that travels in pure bred pigs and are quite common..soo..and for him to check on him is over 100 dollars..so all we can do is hold him warm and pray.

Maybe you could try a different vet that isn't so willing to give up on the poor guy? Even for your own peace of mind so you know you have did everything possible? I hope you find someone who can help.

Hi you must be talking about little Ace then?
I do hope you can see a vet.....isn't there someway you can?
Being told they can do nothing worries me :... you can't diagnose over the phone....... i'm no vet i'm only a mum of piggies but i'd want to see a vet to get reassurance.......
hoping little Ace will be ok..........if you post in health and illness someone who has some experience maybe able to advise more, but we always suggest and strongly advise to see a vet :)
healing vibes for Ace xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

this vet is the only one in the area that deals with piggies and he said hes really sorry but theyres nothing he thinkgs he can do..and if thats the case..i feel so bad because my parents cant afford 140 dollars...:'(

Hi, that sounds terrible. ALthough, in all honesty, I think you should change your vet.

It could be genetic but then it could be an infection that might be cleared up with something as simple as an anti-biotic. Piggies get bacterial infections sometimes and they can affect breathing in particular (URI - upper respitory tract infection).

We went through a lot of this with one of our boys - Biscuit. After months on and off with treatment, he is now (touch wood!) healthy and has been for a few months!

We're sending healing vibes your way but please see if there's another vet who is perhaps a little better acquainted with cavies.

W.a australia ive looked it up and I'm sure its a heart problem because he has no raspy breathing or flem or wet chin and hes moving its just hes gasping..so i dunno and ive looked it up theyre the only vet ..i need another solution

ah ok Western Australia........... i'll see if i can look something up for you........if you're online have you looked on guinealynx for symptoms they have some really good descriptions on illnesses

I did a search for exotic vets in WA......a few came up, i'm sorry i have no idea what area you're in......

do you have any pain relief for piggies that you can give Ace?
If not, the only thing i can suggest at this stage is to keep him warm, not hot, comfortable offer fav veg, hay, pellets, water and give him lots of loves xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Unfortunately some vets are of the opinion that guinea pigs are disposable pets, for want of a better phrase, they are cheap to buy, but as you know when it comes to treatment it is not so cheap. If you can say exactly what area you are in someone can help you finding a vet. Your piggy is suffering and he really needs some help, and that help could be as simple as a course of antibiotics. I feel for you in your situation of having to depend on your parents say so, that's tough :( I really hope you can sort something out and you can get your piggy at least seen by a vet xox

well if hes still here in the morning god hope he will i will beg if i can take him in..the car drive might do it for him though..Also he was hiccuping earlier was this a bad sign.

Ok i will and thanks for ** support...i feel like such a bad owner.

Please don't feel like that....... stay positive....... it will help your piggie :)
If you can you could also try offering some mushed up pellets for him to munch on, they need to keep their gut moving
i'd say you've not got any small syringes, so offering water on a small spoon if he's not drinking will help too.....or you can feed cos lettuce or some cucumber, they've got high water content :)

I'm in Victoria and i'm about to hit the sack.........wishing you all the best xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Let us know how you get on at the vet tomorrow :). I hope it's something a simple course of antibiotics can put right! Good luck!

I'm really sorry to hear about Ace, it does sound like he had some pretty serious issues :(
RIP Ace run free at the bridge, popcorn thru the lush green meadows and enjoy munching on clover and dandelions, you'll be very sadly missed by your family but NEVER forgotten xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It is very hard when you're not the person paying the bills.....
is there some way you can save up and have a fund in case your future piggies get unwell?

HUGS xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

well we can afford the money but it was at 10 o clock at night so theyre was nothing we could do..The vet on the phone said he could look at him but said theyres nothing to sound like he could do...I love the little things and always wanted one..but should i get another pair..8...

Oh right ......... sorry misinterpreted @)

Yes a pair, either two boys or two girls :)
I'm sure there's an RSPCA near you? I know Perth has one, as i know a girl in WA and she got her piggies and dog from there :) (we met whilst we were in Broome!)

Yea theyre is a pair called Fudge and Sunnie in the a shelter but I'm 2 hours drive from perth...and I'm scared that might be bad for the 2...so i dunno would it be safe./

Well as long as you have a proper carrier or a box that they'll be able to have fresh water and food for the whole trip.
Many people on this forum do what's called a piggie train........ they'll get a rescue piggie from say north literally miles and miles down south to their new owner :)
Post a thread and ask some advice, i've only ever rescued piggies and had them in the car for about 1 - 1 1/2hrs....... i couldn't help with the water side of it, so i had cucumber, cos lettuce, canteloupe, but then carrots etc.. for them i had i think 9 piggies if i remember right, it was ages ago :{
You'd need to make sure about the temp of your car, and make sure the sun doesn't shine down on them........ cause you're in WA i'd be waiting for a cooler day, you've had horrendous temps for ages :{
