Hello friends

Having a wee bit of an issue with foods. Fridge taken over by piggies simply because I must feed such and such X times weekly, this and that as a treat, etc.

Can I know how many times cabbage, sprouts and kale can be given.and how strict to be

Are cauliflower in the above family or can I go wild with this?

They love spinach and carrots daily but seems I can't offer this.

So, apart from fresh grass and dandelions only daily food seems to be peppers and corn cobs (which they like to eat over two days for half a cob)

My fridge is full of stuff going off because I can't use it all, so am just buying and offering for a day or two.
Can't get celeriac, etc locally as I live in a country town and that's likely a luxury!

I have, yes, read the list of foods, but it is hard to find something to stick with that is liked. Swede is a no-no for them all. Just bought bag of butternut squash all cut in thin spirals for them, seems this has not much goodness, so it's really to allow them a change on occasion.

What do you use mostly? Everything loved seems to be restricted.
Many thanks

Cauliflower is a brassica like broccoli, brussels and cabbage so you do need to be wary of this. I also would not feed corn on the cob regularly either as it has a high sugar content like carrots do.

This thread has a sample meal for one piggy laid out and there are things that can be fed daily like cucumber mentioned. Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diet

What I do to save waste is I will buy in my weekly veg. If there is spinach in there for example they might have that 3-4 days in a row until the bag is used up but then I will not buy it again for maybe a month or two, or even longer. At the moment I have radish, tomatoes, peppers, celery, cucumber, broccoli, black kale and carrots in the fridge. This will be eaten between us and the piggies and then next time round I will probably have more peppers, celery and cucumber but will pick different items like green beans and lettuce. I find this is the best way to manage veg without having food going off and spending an absolute fortune

Thank you!
I didn't realise I could add green beans.
From the picture of the food bowl on the link, I am definitely offering a lot more food per pig than I need.
I will offer what I have until it runs out, then, and swap over for a week or maybe two.
This was so helpful. Many thanks x

I think you have helped me a bit too, I am waaaay to strict with the piggies diet.

It is a difficult subject isn’t it? So much veg has too much calcium - kale nd spinach being two of them so I don’t feed th ese together and keep to a minimum which is hard as they enjoy Kale particularly. Carrot and sweet corn high in sugar so again not on a daily basis. Mine love cucumber and peppers plus celery, sweetheart cabbage, again not every day, tiny piece of apple and half a grape couple of times a week! Mine don’t like broccoli, parsnip or butternut squash - occasionally take green beans and some will take some tomato! Seem to be quite fussy! They like Parsley but again quite high in calcium, coriander is eaten plus sometimes a little sage and oregano but not basil! Hope this helps! Just shows how different they all are!

I also tend to feed the piggies things that we regularly eat (that's right folks - sometimes humans in this house also eat piggy veg :yikes:), as we get through it much faster and it saves things going off.

But if you still find you have a lot of things going off, then maybe you just need more piggies to eat it all

I’m sure the supermarket knows me personally by now! Must think I’m really healthy with all my Veg!

Just yesterday I commented to my mum that I love it when I need to top up the guinea pig veg as everyone must think I'm so healthy :))

Lol. Hmm, a difficult one. They are taking up so much time with three.
