Can guinea pigs have an allergic reaction to mite treatment? I used the beaphar anti mange and mite parasites. I followed the instructions and gVe her 2 pipettes as she was over 700 grams. I have been to her tonight and she wouldn't eat her veg (though she does this on occasion so I wasn't worried). I got her out and both of her eyes are bulging a bit, one more than the other. One also seems to have a cloudy film over it. I have brought her in and given her 0.25 mls of metacam some probiotics and washed her eyes with cotton wool and salt water. She was eating some grass when I out her back out as a treat.

I obviously will take her to the vets tomorrow if her eyes are still bad. She does not seem to have any other symptoms.
I just wondered about the possibility of an allergic reaction.

Yes, guinea pigs can have allergic reactions to beaphar. Please have her seen by a vet asap as an emergency!

Also be aware that low-dosed shop treatments like beaphar are only geared towards the prevention, but not the treatment of mites. Also be aware that by undertreating you help the mite eggs develop resistence. We have been getting reports of this happening in the last couple of years. If you suspect an acute mange mites attack, always see a vet for a proper diagnosis (as it could be something else) and appropriate treatment and do not home treat on spec.

I gave her the 2 pipettes that was advised on the packet as she only weighs 990grams so would not have needed more than 2. I had to take my last pig with mites to the vets for mites and they gave her Xeno450. Daisy had mites before and had to have injections to cure them. I was going to take her to the vets if no improvement in a week.
Would she also be allergic to xeno450 if she is allergic to the beaphar treatment?
I am taking her to he vets first thing in the morning as she was eating and moving as normal tonight after she had some tlc inside.

Your vet will a) check whether she HAS got mites and b) treat her likely orally or with an injection once she is able to have more ivermectin. I would not recommend any topical treatment.

Has your girl got acute mites or did you do so just to prevent them? Please be aware that the second is not necessary. In healthy guinea pigs, mite eggs (which are present in most piggies these days) are kept under control by a working immune system. They only break out whenever the immune system is not working fully, be it by a not yet fully developed/frail immune system in the very young or elderly, stress or illness. It is much more effective to hit a guinea pig hard with a full 3 rounds treatment whenever you are dealing with an actual outbreak. As you have already treated, any further mites treatment has to wait until the beaphar has worn off.

Good that you are having her seen promptly.

yes that one definitely can. the vet warned me about the use of that one, and also the bob martin one a while back as he'd seen alot of reactions to it :(

definitely advise taking them in to diagnose and treat mites effectively :)

We have seen the vet and she thinks it was just a coincidence as she has an ulcer on her eye from either nails or a hay poke. She has been given some eye drops for her eye and another appointment next week to check or to come back if it gets worse. She has also said if mites no better in 2 weeks to come back and she will give me something else for them. More than likely xeno450.
I do not treat my pigs for preventative mite treatment I know that she has mites as 2 others had it and hers looks the same. It also looks like when she had mites before when I got her from the rescue centre.
Thank you for your response. Next time I will just buy xeno450 even though it is expensive as it know it does work.

Hope you get your wee one sorted out soon.

Just a side note for anyone reading this thread.. Avoid bob martins flea/mite treatments for dogs and cats also- at all costs. The amount of reactions i've seen brought in, even seizures and death- its terrifying that this stuff is still on the shelf.

Replied at same time! Glad she was seen by a vet, hope her eye heals soon x

Thanks so much, I will definitely avoid using it In the future now that I know. I would rather buy the expensive one just to make sure no adverse effects and to get rid of the mites.
