Hello all, just wanted to ask everyones opinion on what this sounds like,
So i gave the boys a bath yesterday which all went completely to plan no issues at all but about half an hour ago Kay started sqeaking like he was hurting. Now he has done this before when i put some 'spot on' stuff on them ages ago and he had a reaction to it on his back so i washed him and put some tea tree cream on it and he was fine. So because i used insecticidal shampoo (in hindsight i feel like an idiot for not realising) I'm thinking its a reaction to the shampoo. He was behaving as normal apart from the squeaks and is eating and pooing without showing signs of pain. Iv put the tea tree cream on his back again and he popcorned as soon as he was off my lap and seems to be in high spirits running around my bedroom floor. I'm gonna keep them on the floor a bit longer to see if it happens again.

What is the name of the shampoo you used and where did you get it from.

Hope he is pain free soon

It's the Johnsons shampoo for small animals, I'd heard the Johnsons stuff was pretty good. But completely forgot about his previous intolerance for insecticides mallethead

Actually, it seems to be when he is weeing. Crap. I cant drive and my mum is at work and i dont know when she finishes. Does anyone know of any piggie savvy vets in the Romford, Essex area where i could get an emergency appointment this evening? i spose ill have to bus it if need be.

Oh no, hope he will be ok.

Sorry not sure of any vets in your area, hopefully someone else will be able to reccommend, good luck x

Is he squeaking when peeing/pooing - arching his back at all ?
If so, he needs to be seen asap by a vet for a possible UTI, cystitis etc.
My poor boar endured courses of antibiotics for weeks but responded poorly to them and we almost lost him. Turned out to be a bladder stone which was removed surgically last week and he's finally back to himself at last. It is horrible to see your little furries in pain.
Sorry, don't know your area for vets - always good to have one in mind in case of emergencies.
Please let us know how you get on.

I wonder if you got some of the shampoo in his private bits? :red Maybe it stings when he wees now? Just a thought, especially if he was okay before the bath?

Just got back from vets, Kay also seemed to have blood in his wee so hes been put on antibiotics. The boys seem overjoyed to be home and kay has been eating and drinking and seems to have forgiven me. And of course in the 3 hours since i started off for the vet i have not heard him cry once (even when he had injections)

Aw, poor little fella, if he is on the meds for a while and even in general i would be tempted to leave him with someone with experince of ill piggies, maybe someone from the forum will look after them for you, just for the piece of mind.

Hope he feels better soon xx

Just monitor his appetite as antibiotics often upset their little tummies - probiotics are always good to give around 2 hours after to balance their gut flora. Any signs of diarrhoea, call your vet back for advice.
I had a very poorly boar in May/June on Baytril then Septrin and he ended up on Critical Care due to him refusing to eat and drink - Dioralyte is good for hydration.
Ensure he has lots of fluids, I give my boy diluted Cranberry juice daily now and he is on Cystease for life to try and help any reoccurence of UTI's and bladder stones.
Hope he responds well to treatment but it is always an idea to prepare yourself for any potential problems that may crop up:

Remember as well, we are always here to help - I found a lot of comfort and strength from experienced members on the forum when my boy was really ill.

The medicince is not an issue as hes on it till monday, and i dont leave till monday evening so i can give him his full course. He seems very happy in himself and has been popcorning in his cage. Leo is the one with the ump as i took him aswell to help Kay feel secrure and he keeps giving me filthy looks and ignoring me lol. I'm just glad iv spotted this now not like a day before i go away.

It may be worth still leaving him with someone with experience of sick piggies, he may start to go downhill again once he is off the meds, so someone with experience will notice and be able to do what ever needs doing.

I will try to find somewhere for them, but its just such short notice (money is not an issue) and having been only on this forum for about a week i dont really know anyone (and wouldnt expect anyone) to just have them. currently browsing boarding websites but everyone seems fully booked

It's not about knowing people, I don't know people personally on here but members do what they can for the piggies.
Maybe put a new thread up, there's still days left yet and a lot of people are online over the weekend. Worth a try for peace of mind so you can enjoy your break :) Wish we lived closer as I wouldn't hesitate to look after the little fella :(

Thanks everyone for the support! the kindness of the members here never ceases to amaze me! its only because of stuff i have read on this forum that i suspected a UTI in the first place.

I don't know if you can get up to Wyton, Cambridgeshire, if you can Vedra at the Cambridge Cavy Hospital does boarding, air conditioned sheds & she is a Rodentologist so would be able to look after any medical problems for you.

I don't mean to worry you but UTI's usually take a couple of weeks of antibiotics to clear up. Septrin is usually the most effective. What have you been given?

Iv got baytril. and this is also why i want him with someone who knows what they are doing.

On a lighter note iv just put pro-biotics into their water and Kay's just had some and did quite a funny :{ face, thought about it for a couple of seconds then decided to ignore the different taste nd carry on drinking.

I've found that non cavy savvy vets often give three days worth of Baytril but I've never found it made a difference. I've now got a cavy savy vet and she perscribes Septrin and Rimadyl (pain killer) for 2 weeks.
How long are you away for?
