I didn't believe it before and I'm not sure I do now but I want to ask whether it's possible for people to be allergic to certain breeds of guinea?
As I think I'm allergic to rex type guineas, whenever I handle Doris or Frazzle for a longer amount of time I come out in a really itchy rash on my arms.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this?

It wont affect me owning them or anything, just curious whether I should wear a jumper all the time i handle them, or if it's a coincidence.

I'm allergic to pigs, and teddies/rexes are certainly a lot worse than other breeds for me to the point where I couldn't own them.

Have you tried taking a daily antihistamine?

For some reason rexes/teddies have a hair type that seems to cause people problems more often so no, you're not imagining it.

Antihistamines are a good idea as is wearing long sleeves when you handle them and not letting them get too close to your face a lot.

Absolutely, My teddy cross is the worst followed by my hort haired. I'm also allergic to short haired dogs too (which is a shame cos i really want a pug!)
My coronet and lunkarya don't cause me any issues tho :^-

I have developed a bit of an intolerance to rex/teddy hair, it brings me out in a rash too and drives me mad with itching but as I have three teddy girls of my own, Rambo (our mascot) and Stewart and some in the rescue I shall just have to cope! I seem to be fine if I wear long sleeves and dont snuggle them into my neck too much. :)

It's good to know I'm not the only one. Such a shame as Frazzle is the best cuddler !

I didnt realise when I got my rex crystal the potential problems and yep, allergic to her which is a little ironic as she has skin problems and requires more handling. All I do is have antihistamines on hand, wear clothes to cover up where she will be and then wash my hands and face after handling her.

It wont stop me having her here, but much as I love rex and teddies I know that I should not have any more.

My two girls are both short haired, but minnie has a quite dry skin and i find i react only to her. I do have animal dander and few more allergies, but just wash your hands etc after handling. i thought over a period of time, you became desensitised? any comments

with cats and dogs I am allergic to them too, but as long as I have them around and come onto regular contact then I retain a built up immunity to them and can cope. For some reason the rex coat sets my skin off in a rash, rather similar to the reaction I had to the goats when I worked with them during birthing, something in the fluids made my skin react which was weird considering it took years to actually become a problem, never reacted for years, then boom, had to wear gloves :{ but then I seem to do that more than others so for me this is normal :))
