Hi,

Last night Walnut had to go in our shed and there is a bunch of cedar/pine wood and hay dust and now this morning she is worse. I feeel horrible about this. I've taken all the wood out and swept up the hay. I'm going to vacum and damp dust everything before she goes back in. She is out in her ARk on the grass with her Mom and friend.

Her nose has yellow discharge and she's sneezing and all plugged up. She's been on antibiotics now for over a week and no change.

I am going to try her on some sudafed decongestant. She is only 2 months old so I don't want to give her the full dose which is 0.2mls. SHould I give her 0.1 ml? That is how much antibiotic dose she is getting?

thanks,
Lynn

I would give her 0.5 ml if she is under 500g. You can also try and dab a bit of vicks on her nose. Your vet could prescribe bisolvon powder (tiny pinch). Like a flu, URI can take its time to clear if it is a catarrh.

Please see your vet if she is getting worse while on treatment. Have you kept a daily ear out for any raspy breath/rattling in her throat and lungs?

I hope that somebody else with experience with allergies can give you more input on that side. However, I would stronlgy advise to finish her course of antibiotics in any case.

Thanks Wiebke, I will definitley finish her antibiotics. I'm going to go get the meds in a bit. Just have to steam my own face as I have a sinus infection... so I definitly feel for the poor Walnut. Yes, I have been checking her lungs and they seem fine. The Vet checked them as well but I will continue to listen and monitor her.

I called the Vet a week ago to tell her that Wally's isn't improving so she extended her antibiotic treatment and told me that if she doesn't improve to start to look in her environment for allergens. But I will take Wally back to the Vets for a re-check if she continues to be plugged up and have the yellowish discharge.

It seems she did get a bit better for awhile when she stayed out of the shed and hutch. That is why I am suspicious of allergies.

Thanks again,
Lynn

It does sound like allergy, sorry to hear she is under the weather with it all. What antibiotic has she been on? Has she been getting worse since on the AB or absolutely no change at all? I agree you should finish the current course of ABs unless the vet is willing to change to a different one. Septrin (Bactrim) can sometimes work where Baytril doesn't.

I find Sudafed Expectorant helpful with allergies, but I've also used Piriton Syrup and find it just as effective and perhaps preferable for longer term use.

I would give her 0.5 ml if she is under 500g.

0.5ml, or 0.05ml Wiebke? If 0.05ml then I would agree.
