As some of you may know a couple of weeks ago Haven was diagnosed with Kidney failure. She is doing well in herself, eating and drinking still etc...so that is good.

But I quickly ordered some Vitakraft Emotion Professional Prebiotic Guinea Pig food on suggestion as it was low protein, the first day Haven ate a few pieces mixed in with her burgess food (blackcurrent and oragano), i have been slowly mixing the food in together and reducing the amount of burgess. But sure enough...she dosnt like the new food. So am currently keeping the burgess and the Vitakraft in the same bowl mixed...hoping she will eat both....

Just wondered if their was another low protein/kidney friendly food i could try for Haven? If not will just keep doing as i am doing... just wondered if their was an alternative food?

Also anyone else who has or has had a kidney piggie have any tips it would be most appreciated, i want to keep her eating and keep her appetite as much as possible.

Thank you

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about kidney problems, or what to avoid in foods in order to help the piggies.

I have recently starting feeding this to my Jerry who has bladder issues:

I don't know if it would be any good for piggies with kidney problems, but thought I'd let you know just in case it was suitable...

Thank you for your reply. I may email them and ask for the nutritional information. Thanks so much for your reply :) means allot x

That's okay :) Sorry I can't be more help! I really don't know if it would be any good for Haven, but it was created by scientists with poorly piggies in mind, so perhaps it will be okay. I think ringing them would be a good idea. I recently phoned the manufacturer of one of the medications that Jerry takes because it seemed 'off', and they were super helpful!

No you have been a help :) thank you. Even if it isn't suitable...just pleased that someone replied :D Will give them a call/email tonight for the nutritional information. :)
Thanks again :)

I don't but I've had a sludgy pig and one currently has gall stones and its got the lowest fat content I can find so we're sticking to it!

Awsome thanks. Have had a look and it says "low protein" so am going to email for the nutritional info". Do you find they like it? Haven seems quite fussy dry food wise...and seems to only like burgess blackcurrent and oregano so far lol. Thanks so much for your help. You have been a Big help!

They absolutely love it. Even my fussy pig who would previously only eat muesli loves it. I dont have the bag at the moment but I have a new bag in the car, I'll post the nutritional info for you tomorrow if you like

Thanks ...that would be great if you could. You have been a big help! Thank you x

Less protein, calcium, and fat, and higher fibre, its a winner all round, although its a little more expensive and harder to get hold of than other foods. Ask your vet how much they can get it in for, it may be cheaper than other places!

Thanks will do. Going to take Haven for a check up next week so will see what they say. You have been a big help :D

Hi, have you tried Versele-Laga Cavia Complete (protein 15.5 %, calcium 1%) from zooplus? I use this and the Vitakraft.
And I think for a kidney-pig you can feed more fresh vegetables, such as cucumber wich is rich in water. These "flush" the kidney.

Thanks for the info. But Haven dose not have a kidney failure have since been to an experianced piggy vet and it was actually thyroid and she is doing well. But thanks for the info. :-)

Out of curiosity how was the initial 'kidney failure' diagnosed?

I have heard good things about John Chitty, an experienced piggy vet can make all the difference. Glad your little one is doing well now. :)

It was from my old vet. They wernt very piggy experianced. I went to vet after my piggie was loosing weight, drinking and urinating loads. They did a "urine test" and said that she had a high urine protien. She also developed a lump on her throat.
I wasnt happy with the diagosis as my vet wasnt happy to do a blood test as he thought sedation was risky to do a blood sample and also he was sure it was sure it was kidney failure... i was unhappy with the way it was beibg handled for a few reasons as u can imagine.... (Long story short). lol.
