Alternative to hay rack?

Sofia is 6 weeks old but she is tiny, and today whilst I was trying to pick her up when she was in her hutch she ran through the hay rack which was empty because the guinea-pigs had pulled all the hay onto the floor. Whilst she's this small I know she can fit through it but as she gets bigger I'm worried she'll get stuck, but my guinea-pigs are on vetbed and hay is difficult to get off it so I don't want to just put the hay on the floor, but if I put it in a bowl they'll just tip it up.
I was thinking of bedding a C&C grid into a hay rack but I don't know if she'd still fit through it? Or do you have any other ideas on a hay rack that she couldn't fit into?
 
A corner litter tray, ours love it, they munch away and poop at the same time. Or depending on the height of the hutch you can use the base of a pet carrier, or even a whole one without the door on
 
Use a hay rack that sits outside the cage?

Or you could do something like hang a toilet roll tube from the roof of the cage (put a hole in it and put some wire or string through it and have it hanging) and stuff it with hay. :)

Hopefully she won't be silly enough to get stuck, like one of my dogs who got stuck halfway through the gate today! :)
 
I have a hay wheel and Crazee loves it, she has great fun turning it to get the hay out and it keeps the cage clear of hay. The ball is on a frame that clis to the bars of the cage

I tell you-Ive read so many piggy sites and read books and none have helped me as much as this forum has in only a few days in joining :))
 
OOh I am glad you posted this as I have just got a hutch today and was wondering the best way to feed the hay to avoid it getting trampled in and wasted. Those of you that have outdoor hutches do you use racks at all? With the toilet roll I take it its safe for them to nibble on the cardboard then?
 
Yep cardboard is safe and my lots love loo rolls empty and stuffed with hay. Careful with babies though as they can get stuck in them - I usually snip all the way down the roll so they can't get wedged but for real mini ones even that might not be enough.


I have been having the same dilemma with hay and Dolly's babies, she now has perspex round the sides of the cage to stop the babies sneaking out and hay in a normal hay rack - not a C&C one as they could get in that.

Worried about the hay rack!
 
Lisa, you might not need a rack while the babies are little? Here in Sweden skinnies get their hay served in piles on the cage floor like furries and I never hear about injuries... You could get some soft hay maybe, rather than oxbow timothy, if you are worried (I know you know your hay :) )
