I feed both our guinea pigs approx 1 cup of fresh veg/fruit in the morning (between them) and approx 1 cup in the evening. There is hay and dry food in their cage at all times. I would think that this would be satisfying enough .... but if I happen to have a little snack myself during the day Nutmeg comes out from hiding and becomes very vocal. Lunchtime is the same. When I hear her I tend to respond with a little snack ... a few extra kale leaves or a slice of apple or a couple of baby carrots. Is this okay? I don't want to overfeed.

Our piggies are 4-5 months old.

Okay, great. I guess I have been going "by the book" ie feed fresh food twice daily ... but I'll go by what the piggies want and feed them when they "ask". Thanks.

My piggies have constant pellets and hay of course but they also get 2 meals of veges, and when I'm making lunch for me or my daughter i always slip them extra bits and pieces,Bandit wheeks until i do and he isn't over weight he is actually a very normal sized piggy ;) xxxxx

Guinea pigs are grazers, so they are used to eat little, but often. As I'm in most days, they gets handfuls of grass during bad days, and the odd bit of apple, and a bit less veg in the evening.

Okay - I'll start treating them as grazers - should be easy - I'm one myself!

It is best to stick with 2-3 main meals of veggies and give them a small amount of veg for those "exclusive snacks". Too many greens and fruits can lead to upset tummies, so don't feed them "on demand" too often. They will graze on their hay and dried food as they please, but guinea pigs do love routines of veggie feeding.

Mind you, they don't behave better when they know they can get away with it! Just keep the overall amount of veg the same and count grass as hay.

I wouldn't ever increase how much I feed my piggies veggie-wise. Their diet should be mainly fibre and adding extra veggies takes that down as they gorge themselves in a day of veggies instead. It adds a routine I can keep up with to their day, too, which I like, instead of me being bratted around by spoilt wheekers who have learned that demanding gets them what they want.

I also limit pellets, but my boys are big boys and pellets are the only thing in their diet that can contribute to constant weight gain which I don't want to happen.

Okay thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice I get here on this forum - would be lost without it!

My piggers live in hay as they seem happiest, sprawl out constantly and can lay, relax, doze, and munch at the same time. It definitely keeps them veerrrry happy and means they are spoilt little pigs!x>>
