Hi I am going to adopt my nephews two boars. I'm not keen on their names. Does every one else keep the names that their rescue piggies came with. Would be interested to know, thanks. :)

I don't think it is mean. My pigs weren't rescues so I picked mine - If I had a pig who already had a name and I didn't think it suited, I would change it.

I have changed names; the piggies were not much fussed. You'd be astonished how many piggies will change names with a new home - it is a new beginning after all!

Three year old Dizzy was decidedly NOT a demure little Daisy!
Nerys and Nia were unloved, unwanted Dotty and Lottie.
Cariad and Ceri used to be Peggy and Maggie at the breeder's.
Four year old Fflur was Flower in her previous home.
Taffy Telyn Ffion and Ffowlyn didn't have names when they came into rescue/were born in rescue.
Llewelyn who started all the Welsh names was actually named by his (Welsh) rescue and the name stuck.

I even have changed the names of my two youngest piggies after a few weeks when I got to know them better!

My 2 recent newbies were called Betsy and Sophie but the names didn't fit in with my E theme so Betsy was renamed Erin and Sophie was renamed Ena to fit in with Eleanor and Eliza :)

Ancient Chinese Proverb no 7463598102:

She (or he) who looks after the piggies chooses the names.

Ancient Chinese Proverb no 7463598103:

She (or he) who uses the piggy name chooses the piggy name.

I am not sure which one applies the most.

Is your nephew very young? If he is young and might be upset about it, then I would just change their names but not tell him! You could still use their old names if he was around.

If he is older then I'm sure he won't mind. New start, new name. :)

I always change my animal's names, I just don't like them usually!

My Moxie was called Marty by his owners. I sent the family an email to update them a while after getting him and said I changed his name and they didn't mind at all.

And Meeko was called Marco by the ISPCA inspector, but my ex boyfriend's name is Mark, and I didn't really like the name Marco either, so I changed it, but kept it similar because he seemed to respond to it! :)

My rescue Sancho was called Muffin. I asked him what he thought of his name and if he minded if we changed it to Sancho. He said he thought Sancho was a bit more manly and South American sounding, we both agreed this suited him better. We haven't looked back! :)

Minx was Link when she came to me from my friend and his daughter. It was always agreed that I would change her name but I don't get upset when they forget and call her Link. :)

I wouldn't think that he will mind too much at that age; it's not like a five year old!

Yeah I doubt he'll mind too much. :)

Well done for taking them in :)

I didn't change Stripes name, I figured he was 2 1/2 and was going through enough changes having left his home and been put up for adoption, without confusing him by changing his name.
I think if it had been a really daft name I would of changed it, imagine the vet calling his name....
It does cause confusion as I've got Spike and Stripes so he ends up being called Mr Stripey Stripes!

My two came here as Bob (neutered male and Jay (female). They got those names when they were bought by their first owner who thought they were both boys. Jay turned out to be a girl and had two babies which the owner rehomed through a small rescue in NI.

The owner had no problem with my kids choosing new names for the pigs. I think she knew they were going to be looked after and cared for and that was all that mattered. She has since said she really likes their new names, which makes me happy. :)

I had a friend at uni who took on a piggie. She could never decide what to name him so he had various different names given to him by the different flatmates of my friend. A year later she moved back to Norway so I helped her rehome him to my mums friend so his name was changed then not long after his original owner finally chose a name. So his list is as follows
Mr G
Mini pig
Vinny
Fred
Tuk Tuk
Scoobie

For the brief times I got to look after him me and my BF coined the name
Mr Minivinniepiggyfredge

We have loads of rescue pigs and have changed some names and kept others to suit ourselves. If you are not happy with the names then change them.

I really love think up nice names for pets!

But my dad named one of MY cats Reg, and it just stuck. I wanted to call him Ziggy . . . but then everyone kept calling him Reg! But I call him Reggie, because it's cuter!

And my brother called his dog Cosworth (a type of car) . . . which is the stupidest name ever for a pretty little Cavalier. rolleyes And she is practically my dog anyway, so I should have been allowed choose her name, lol. We call her Cossie or Puppy.

And I wish I could have changed their names, but those names stuck!
