I've not been on holiday for a long time but am due to have a week away shortly and my piggies will be 'going on holiday' to a brilliant rescue for 9 days. I have no worries about their care but I'm a bit concerned that they will not remember me and their home when I get them back, as I know they live for the moment, not the past or future. (a good thing sometimes), so to cut the story short, I am feeling guilty about leaving them in an unfamiliar place.
Am I over-thinking this?

Our boys have always remembered everything when they arrive home from boarding.
The only thing I find is our guinea pigs always have a massive nap on arriving home. If it’s their first time boarding I usually get a bit of a cold shoulder attitude for 24hrs too!

Have a lovely time on your holiday.

I adopted my Bella, Clover and Poppet from the same place at different times (probably over a year between the first and last of the 3) and they absolutely remembered each other when reintroduced. They live for the moment but they also have good memories, especially for positive things like food routines and friends. They won't forget you at all, don't worry!

Don’t you worry. They will definitely remember you ❤️

Don't worry, your piggies will remember you and their home! They have actually very good memories. They can recognise other piggies, places or still remember routines several years later. And they can carry grudges for years as well...

What you may have to brace about is getting the cold shoulder treatment for the first couple of days or so to tell you that they haven't enjoyed the holiday break from their routine/home but you will soon be forgiven.

My now 6 years old Macsen went during his cage clean this afternoon to have a look under the table cage and be clearly puzzled because this used to be his cage with Manon and Maelona... Even if that cage has been gone for nearly a year now when I ended up in hospital as an emergency with a broken hip and both sows have sadly passed away (but he is happy again with two of my older sows and often snuggles up in the hay tray with Beti by his side).

Piggies have good memories. Before the pandemic, a friend used to pigsit my group. Then came the pandemic and I didn't go away for two years. We also didn't visit indoors.
So when my friend came to visit me again it was probably about three years that some of my piggies have seen my friend (the others were younger), but Tessy definately remembered my friend the moment she walked into my living room though she had only stayed there once when she was a little piggy.

Some piggies are very good at giving you the cold shoulder though.

How right you all were so right! I got back from holiday today and collected my piggies from their holidays and yes, although they knew their own homes I have certainly getting the cold shoulder treatment! Hope it doesn't last long 🤞 I had a good holiday though

🤞🏽, hope your gang find some love for you again soon. A pea flake or two sometimes does the trick here. (Good old cupboard love!)
Glad you had a good holiday.
