Hi I’m a new owner of 2 male guinea pigs (11 weeks old now). I’ve had them since they were 7 weeks old.
Just wanted some clarification that I’m feeding them enough.
They’re currently living indoors as it’s been cold outside, and they have a bowl of Burgess Excel pellets a day (which they never finish - I always have to empty the excess and refill the bowl), unlimited Timothy hay, and a cup full of fresh veg/fruit in the evenings.
We’ve weighed them today and they weigh 300-400g each. Been reading and I’m worried that this is underweight for them at 11 weeks old?
They don’t appear bony or underweight and they seem to be very happy and playful.
I’m just worried that I’m doing something wrong.
Any advice would be welcomed!
Many thanks.

Hi and :wel:
Pellets should be maximum two tablespoons per day each. Once they reach 16 weeks (4 months) then you drop it down to one tablespoon each a day.

Fruits, carrots and tomatoes should be fed as an occasional treat and not daily. They’re highly in sugar and tomatoes/acidic fruits can cause mouth sores if fed too often.

Basic daily veg can be cucumber, a leaf of lettuce (excluding iceberg), a sprig or two of coriander and a slice of bell pepper.

The important thing is that they’re putting on weight every week. How much did they weigh exactly? There is no set weight because of the different body sizes they come in. Have a read of the guides below for more detailed information.

:wel: and :agr:

What is important is putting on weight steadily and healthily.
Ensure that their diet is hay based, with one cup of veg per day and one tablespoon of pellets per day (don’t fill a bowl with pellets, it’s good they aren’t eating them Though because pellets are the least healthy part of their diet, excess pellets will contribute to unhealthy weight gain but also excess calcium in the diet which can cause health issues).
Do read the guides that have been linked in above

My baby seems to be putting on 30 ish g a week if that is anything to go by. Have you been weighing weekly and has weight been increasing steadily?

Nothing to worry about if so.
