Hi! I'm a first time piggy owner, I have had my boys a week now, they are 11 weeks old! I got them from Pets at Home!
I have been doing a lot of reading up to make sure I'm doing the right thing for my piggies, but I'm a bit worried I'm not feeding them enough!
A typical day has been:-
Morning- 30g pellets, stuffed hay tray and a scattering of hay on the floor of their cage, small handful of salad leaves, a fine bean each, 1/2 baby corn each and fresh water.
Mid day top up of hay.
Evening- same as the morning but i try and vary the veg a bit, i put some parsley in with the green leaves, mange tout is proving to be popular, and a couple of blueberries.

I have some 'treats' as well, i brought hay cookies i broke one in half and they enjoyed that, i also got some of those crunchy fruit stick things ( i know they are piggy junk food and should be fed very sparingly if at all) i broke one into quarters but will only give once a week. I live in a flat so they wont be going outside, but i have a garden at work so have picked grass for them from the garden at work which they went mad for this morning...it didn't touch the sides ( i washed it before i gave it to them, i don't know if i needed to?! If they were outdoor piggies they would go straight on the grass!)

Because they were pet shop piggies i thought they probably weren't use to veg and fruits so didn't want to give them too much to soon. So how much fresh should I give them a day, as i was going to start increasing the amount...but don't know how much is too much?

Sorry for rambling, thank you for any advice you can give me!

When it comes to new piggies ive always introduced fresh veg very slowly and over the space of a few weeks. So i would choose 1 veg type and feed only this once per day, after a few days if everything is ok (i.e piggy is eating it and poops are normal) i will then introduce another veg type (in small quantities) i would them give only the two veg types for 3-4 days - again if everything is ok i continue the adding 1 at a time until they are on a good varied diet. The general guideline for fresh veg is 1 cup full per piggy per day (around 50g)

Stay away from pet shop treats they are too high in sugar and not needed by piggies - an alternative should you want to give your pigs a treat is a piece of fruit (such as apple or a grape) once a week/every couple of weeks.

Hay should make up 80% of their diet so make sure they get this in unlimited quantities.

In the summer my pigs spend a lot of time outdoor in our garden - however our grass has never been treated with pesticides etc so we know it's 100% safe. The problem with picking grass is you can never be too sure whether a dog/cat/other animal has fouled on it or that chemicals haven't been used recently - i would personally stay away from grass/plants you dont know haven't been treated or are clean from animal mess.

My lot get grass daily - however with each of my new additions (i have 10 pigs) i have done the same as when giving fresh veg and introduced it very slowly (1 small handful every few days to begin with) Guinea pigs love grass and will eat & eat, for those not used to it, it can cause an upset tummy - so limiting their intake to once every few days/every week will enable you to control their intake and allow their digestive system to adjust to their new diet.

Enjoy your new piggies - if you are anything like most of us on this forum i doubt you'll stick with just the two :p they are addictive little things....
