I went in to my local PS and brought some hay, and i over heard 1 of the assistants telling a customer as long as a pig is eating Hay not to worry about dryfood!

I thought i missed heard at first but mum heard it as well.
So with that i said a piggy needs hay, dry food, fresh water and fresh veggies, not just Hay.
Needless to say my input didn't go down very well.

There are many people who believe pellets are not a very important source of food. If they are getting lots of hay and enough veg to give them their daily requirements for vit c and other vits and minerals then the other dry food is not as important. Personally I do feed one daily feed of veg, one daily feed of pellet and as much hay as they can eat but hay is the biggest part of their diet. Fresh water is obviously very important as you mentioned.

I went to our PS today. While I was waiting at the till a Lady ask if there was anyone else in the store serving. (Which there never seems to be?) The lad behind the till said that he would be with her once he had served us. There were 2 people in front of me and another 2 behind me waiting to pay.(Payday!)
The Lady said that she needed someone now as one of the hamsters in the cage is stuck and doesn't seemed to move anymore. He told her to hang on and he be with her when he can. The Lady in front of me told him to go.
Surely if you work in a Pet Shop you must have some compassion towards animals.

I dont think they do, they see pound signs in the animals.
Our PS is disgusting, the animals are over crowded and in dirty conditions
They've had many complaints but nothing makes any difference.

The vet today told me that Africa would start eating his dried food soon, but to make sure he had fresh veg everyday and when I asked what was most inportant for him to get his vit c, he shook his head. =S

In my local 'Acorn' pets, the staff were all about 16 years of age. When I was on my high horse about the 'G-Force' movie, I asked one of the assistants if they had noticed an inrease in the sale of guinea pigs. They said yes and rubbed their hands together as though 'money, money, money'. Maybe they were on comission for every animal they sold. I could never work in a pet shop. I would need to move house to house all the animals I would take home. Well done you for speaking up...

It does my head in at how stupid they really are.
I look at my 3 babies and i thank god they have never been in a place like that and never used as money machines.
Instead they have love and are very spoilt with cuddles and kisses and lots of yummy food and i know my beautiful girl hasn't been used for money.
Different if its an accident as accidents happen but the PS put boys and girls together for more money mallethead

Your piggies are very very lucky to have such a wonderful, caring lovely mummy..

I have stopped going in my local pet shops and I buy my hay and food from a local garden centre - they don't sell pets and they stock the burgess food and hay which I use. I thought it was the best thing to do rather than getting upset in the pet shop and getting stressed out about what I might see :)
