does anyone think I'm worrying too much? i have a 10 month old boar who in the last few days has been off his food, when he has his veggies he plays with them rather than eating them! ive noticed when he eats carrot he just seems to chomp it into little pieces then leaves it, ive seen him eating hay and he has touched his pellets this morning :) now he was 1.3kg and i weighed him yesterday and he was 1.185kg, his poo and everything is normal so I'm wondering if it could be his teeth? i tried looking at them last night but he wouldn't have it, i wrapped him in a towel and he still stuggled like hell :( from the glimpse i did get of them they looked ok, i've never had a piggy with teeth problems so I'm not sure what to look out for?

It does sound like teeth trouble especially with leaving food once it has been chomped up a little. We can't really see back teeth so I would take him to a guinas savy vet for a little look.

One of my foster boys is currently grinding his teeth. I've given him thick hay so I'm hoping that does the trick if not off to the vet we go. He is eating and his weight is ok.

If guineas dont eat then that is a sign something is amiss and a vet trip is for the best.

Good luck hope he is ok,

Louise

i think its his teeth...do you have a good cavy vet? as he wont need to be sedated or given a g.a to clip them..it takes 5 seconds to clip them anyway.
our cavy expert says that if the front teeth dont look right that ,that is an indication that the back teeth are wrong somewhere..our 18 mth old boar has a jaw area abscess and his front teeth were splintering so when we looked at his back teeth they were indeed over grown..

Agree he's likely to be uncomfortable in his mouth perhaps teeth, abscess, thrush. You need to see a vet soon before he looses any more weight. Have sent you a PM.

I agree with everything that has been said. Definately a trip to the vet. If his pre-molars/molars need trimming/filing this can be done without anesthetic. Don't worry, it won't hurt him. They have no nerves in the teeth.

If he wants to eat but having trouble and losing weight, I think you need to see a vet with him as soon as possible.

I have only once had a problem with teeth in my piggies. That was with Joey who was unwell for ages and one of his front teeth broke off. Vets usually check back teeth and I know that other members have had problems with back teeth in their pigs.

Has he any discharge from his nose? Or swellings around his face or neck?

I agree with the other posters, it sounds like he needs to be checked out by a vet. One of our boys had teeth problems and he used to do exactly as you described, he would eat his carrot but little pieces would re-appear. It turned out that he had reverse maloclusion and had developed spurs on his molars. Good luck with your little guy and keep us posted.

my piggies do this with their carrot, chew it up into klittle bits, some days but not all days.

what would you suggest?

I would probably get them checked as it could be the start of dental problems but saying that if your piggies have always done that then there is probably nothing to worry about.

thanks for all the replies we've got the vets at 820am tomorrow :) i came home from work and he'd eaten most of the veggies i gave him this morning just little bits of carrot and cabbage he didn't eat, i gave him a handful of grass and he ate the lot :) and he keeps popping out of his pigloo to nibble on his hay :) i've felt around his face and he doesn't have any lumps or bumps and he doesn't have any discharge from his nose :) my vet has been pretty good with my other piggies so fingers crossed they just need to be trimmed xx

hi moonie :)

well they decided to keep him in as she couldn't get a look at his teeth properly so he's got to go under :( so I'm actually quite worried as he is my baby :(

really? I'm very surprised at that - either way I'm sure he will be fine! sending him lots of hugs!

Keep us updated on his progress x

i was quite surprised too but then i can't just leave him to starve to death :(

will keep you updated :...

aw I'm sure it will be ok, when did they say they were going to call? how bout try to call them?

they never said a time but i know morning surgery finishes at half eleven so hopefully they will ring anytime now :... :... ive just tried ringing and its engaged

aw well keep trying, you never know and least they will know that you are eager to hear back x

sorry i've not been on earlier i've been at work :) they have examined JJ and there was nothing wrong with his teeth and they couldn't find anything else wrong so i guess thats a good thing :) he's being kept in overnight for observation, i went to see him on my break from work and he looked ok :) he was sat munching on some carrot and cabbage :)

just rung the vets jj is still not eating properly hes eating veg and hay but not food :( gotta ring back later to see if he can come home :(

Have they checked for thrush, that can make their mouth/tongue sore? I use Daktarin oral gel, don't know what your vet would recommend.

my baby is home!! :<>:<>:<>

had a long chat with the vet and she was puzzled as to what is/was wrong with him, hes now on a weeks course of baytril and metacam and hes got to go back next wednesday.

since he came home at 6pm hes emptied his food bowl, eaten most of the hay i gave him and hes now stretched out with a fat belly :))

JJ was doing so well last night now he's gone downhill again :( hes hardly touched his veggies this morning, i gave him spring greens, carrot and cucumber and a little bit of lettuce, hes eaten a slice of cucumber and a little nibble of the greens and lettuce, ive filled his bowl up with hard food and a big handful of hay, but hes just sat in the corner of his cage looking really miserable, and he keeps sitting with his paws on the food bowl looking at me as though to say "help me mum, I'm hungry" :( i've put some probiotic in his water as he's on meds, its really upsetting me seeing him like this he looks perfectly healthy 8...
