I don't know if that's the correct title for it :red but I have a 5 year old boar, George. I have noticed that above his bum hole, there is a small pea (petite pois!) sized lump and I was wondering if this is anal impaction? If so, what can I do about it? BTW, he does still poo a whole lot especially over my floor when he's having his carpet time :x and he's fed a diet of pig mix muesli a big bowl in the morning and half a bowl for supper, unlimited hay, and veggies or fruit once daily.

Bilbo has impaction. You need to get a glove on and empty his sack! offer him up what you get out, he'll need the b12 vitamins from it. Give him a little bit of pineapple twice a week its good for the intestinal tract. After a few goes youll have it down to a fine art!

Thanks for your replies :) Does it smell? Do i just massage the lump? Bleeurgh, i'm starting to feel nauseus.

Yes it really reaks! If he is pooing normally i wouldn't imagine he has impaction as i thought impaction meant they couldn't poo.....? I've never had this problem though so i dont know.

hmmm...I thought they couldn't poo either...perhaps it depends on how bad it is

when you say 'lump' what exactly do you mean though? because an impaction is less of a lump and more of a 'wedge of poo'

It depends on how badly impacted Bilbo is. sometimes when i let him out for a wander he'll be a bit impacted but still leave parcels about. Other times when he's badly impacted he wont leave parcels. So yeah i think it just depends on how bad it is. I have noticed tho sometimes he will drag his bum and the impaction will come out of it's own accord.

Personally i put him on my knee on his back and use my thumb and index finger to pull his sack back then gently squeeze the poop out. if that makes sense. it does reek to high heaven. i used to work on a farm though so it doesn't really bother me. I learned to close my nostrils!!ababy wipe can be handy to just to give the sack a bit of a wipe around. always offer p what you get out. it does knock me sick when he eats it but ho hum needs must.

It was my vet who said to give a smidge of pinapple as it's good for the instestinal tract (makes it sticky) so the pops form better. it does seem to help, his impction seems less severe when he's had some. Luckily he seems used to me fiddleing with his bits so it doesnt bother him at all. I swear though he sighs when he sees my hand with a glove on "here we go again" My mate keeps calling me the Piggie Fiddler lol!
