In the past year (or so) I’ve gone from 8 piggies down to just 3 due to old age, health issues or just sudden passings.
It was hard work having 3 cages, each with a little herd. But I of course, loved them all deeply. And understandably now that I have a human baby everything became that little more difficult as I don’t just have piggies, I have horses, a Dog, chickens, budgies, cockatiels and a large property to maintain.
So now that I’m down to just 2 cages, A Single but happy Newton. And newly bonded Henry and Buttons it’s slightly easier to find time for the piggies (of course I have always found time for them..but you know what I mean!). It was terribly sad saying goodbye to Lion recently, as well as an extremely hard decision but a few days later I could sigh a slight breath of relief knowing he is no longer struggling and I can stop spending $90-$180 every 4 weeks for his vet visits. And that I know have a much more manageable piggie room.
But in saying that, I of course miss my three cages and I miss all my rainbow bridge piggies. It’s very strange having just the three little wheekybums calling for their dinner and having the two cages and room for a sofa and plant!

After Lions death I bonded Henry with Buttons which was successful, Buttons was very down for a few days after Lion so she was grateful to have spunky little Henry to cheer her up. And Henry was very very excited to claim Lions wife! Essentially as he had lived alone for quite some time after Wrens passing.

I’ve been very strong the past few months in not searching the web for more rescue piggies. Especially as Newton is on his own. He has lived many years with me, with 4 different sows whom he’s loved. But he actually seems more than content on his own so I must just learn to draw the line somewhere. Plus he has Buttons and Henry to chat to across the room and to sniff through the bars if he’s having floortime.

Spring is almost here, things are looking up.

I am so very sorry about your string of losses - so many precious faces no longer greeting you - and your decision to not get any more piggies. Feeling with you, as I am in the same boat.

Anyway, I've still got a lot more piggies to go than you but I am about halfway down from my long term numbers and the crazy 13 cages with 27 piggies I ended up with during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, what you gain in terms of cage space and less cages to clean you pay for in terms of heartache when you come towards the end of your longer term piggy ownership as your life and your life commitments change. It's definitely not getting any easier... :(

Ah Hannah - we know how much you love animals and how your heart steers you towards those that need to be rescued
As you said you still have other animals and a human baby to care for and sometimes our priorities change
It sounds as if it’s just right for you all at this time …..
Sending smiles and love to your happy family ( human and furry) ❤️

You have such a lovely family and all those piggies had a wonderful life with you.
It would be odd if you didn’t miss them given how much you loved them.

Life changes and maybe one day in the future there will be more piggies.

Lovely to see Oscar growing up 🥰
