My girl Ella has died today. She wasn't even a year old. I am very upset but also deeply confused. I bought Remy first at Petco and decided she needed a friend so I went back the next day and bought Ella. From the start Remy was the lively, ran around, squealed when she was hungry type, Ella just ate all the time and was very quiet. Over the months, Remy picked up weight quickly and has filled out Nicely, while Ella has always been skinny. She ate constantly and there were two bowls and fresh hay provided daily with the occasional treats and veggies. She never really squealed and was never active, I just took it that she was the runt. Well 4:30 in the morning last night I got up and Remy squealed to eat so I fed them and Ella ate and then drank from her bottle, today at 4pm Ella was sitting in a corner and I was concerned so I took her out, at first she was just sluggish then her body shut down. I thought her leg was broken because she kept falling over to her side, then nothing was working. She seemed to be gasping for air, 10 minutes later she died in my sister's arms. Now I assumed it was the respirtory infection, but shes been eating and drinking and wasn't making weird breathing noises. With Max he was a couple days not eating and made these breathing cold noises. I think that Ella has always had something wrong, or maybe it was something quick like a seizure. Just in case I have scrubbed everything so Remy won't get it. Remy seems perfectly fine, I don't think she even minds that she's gone. From this point on I refuse to by a piggy from a petstore such as Petco.

PS when I bought these two I changed everything because of the stories I heard about pine causing the upper respirtory infection. Any insight?

You've done everything you could for her love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: These little furbabies hide their problems from us and it's often too late once we realise they're ill :( :( :( Be reassured that she went to the bridge knowing how much she was loved, you were with her to the end :smitten:
Was she wheezy at all ? if so that would be URI :(
If you want another piggie for your little Remy perhaps you could go to a rescue centre, but take her with you so she can pick her new friend.

I agree with Glynis.

Unfortunately pigs from pet shops (I hear from people I know in the US that Petco are one of the worst) are often sickly, inbred animals and there was probably nothing you could have done if it happened so suddenly.

Pine shavings are not good they can contribute to respiratory and skin problems.
 
i am sorry to hear about ella, RIP sweet angel 0:) 0:) 0:) reunited with max; run free and popcorn in paradise 0:) 0:) 0:) watch over rompy and your mummy. stay in their hearts and be with them in spirit. she knew you loved her and she must have felt comforted to slip away in your sisters arms.

Poor Ella :( I expect there was nothing you could've done, at least she had a comfortable home in the end. Probably she had something internal going on (result of poor breeding, like others have said) if there were no outward signs. RIP Ella x
 
Now if I do consider getting another one for Remy, should it be around her age, or would it be okay to get a baby? I'm not even sure if she wants another housemate, if she does which would work better?
 
With sows it shouldn't matter too much - adult or baby. A reputable rescue would let you visit with your piggy and have her choose herself a new friend!
 
I am so very sorry about Ella. My heart is broken for you. I was just wondering where your PetCo was that you bought her. I bought a piggie from PetCo, not knowing about their reputation, about 5 months ago. He is now about 6 months old. He had 3 surgeries already and is now going to the doctor tomorrow for his 3rd abscess. He has not been well at all since I had him. I went on line and read all these horror stories about PetCo. I'm sick over what I saw. I have spent close to $2,000 on surgeries. I bought him from a PetCo in Long Island, NY. They don't care that they sell sick animals. You fall in love with them and then they get sick. I have been posting all about Ricky's surgeries on this forum and everyone has been wonderful. I've made great friends. Everyone is always there for you when you need to talk with someone. Once again, I am very sorry for your loss.. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
 
I bought Ella and Remy from a Petco in Glen Burnie. I had always heard worse stories about Petsmart so this time I went to Petco. WHen I bought my first piggy, back in the 90's I got her from a small pet store that was family owned and she lived almost 9 years! Max my second, was from a mall pet store, he lived to be almost 6. Remy seems to be doing fine since Ella's passing. There's not many guinea pig rescues around me so thats why mine have always been from Petstores. I wish I could find a breeder somewhere in Maryland :( But if i can't get one from a rescue I may not get another.

I'm so sorry you lost Ella. It sounds like you did all you could to make things better. Have you checked out http://www.cavyspirit.com/ it may be worth emailing them to see if there is a rescue anywhere remotely near you? It's easy for us here in the UK as we have quite a few, but appreciate the distances in the US, Canada and Oz are quite different! I believe the Cavy Spirit are pro-rescue, so it may be worth getting in touch.
