Hi,

My 3 years old guinea pig has got angled molars on the right side. He had his molars filled 3 times under GA in the last 3 weeks. Because of angled mollars the wear of the teeth is not normal and he cant eat because of the sharp edges on teeth.
What do you think we can do?
Do you think that if we pull teeth out would solve the problem.
Sorry for my english.
Thanks for the answers.

Oh so sorry to hear that your little piggie has problem molars. Firstly which Country are you in then perhaps we can recommend a piggie experienced vet

Slovenia, he was checked by exotic vet, that is specialized in small rodents.

Hi and welcome

When you speak of angled molars, do you mean that they are not sitting right in the mouth (misalignment) or that they are growing spurs because your guinea pig is not chewing evenly for some reason?

Could you please add your country to location in your account details. You can access your account details by clicking on your forum ursername on at the top. This makes it appear with every post you make and helps us a lot. Our default advice in UK based; this way we know that we cannot give it.

It is not misalignment, the molars on lover right jaw grow in such an angle towards the tongue, that when he eats and wears them down, the spurs from lover theeth press on upper jaw and he then stops eating.

How old is your guinea pig? Has he always had this problem or is is totally new?
How much hay do you feed in your diet?

Has your vet checked whether there could a reason why your guinea pig is suddenly not chewing evenly? There is often a pain issue when a guinea pig stops chewing equally on both sides.

Unfortunately the forum member with the greatest dental experience is offline this week.

He is 3 years old, this started last month, there was no problem before.

I wonder if your piggie has pain in his right jaw. This often makes them chew on one side more than the other, so that side then does not wear down as much and can either grow into the cheek or as you say over towards the tongue. have a look for dental problems on the Guinea Pig Lynx website, it has photos and is quite informative. One of my piggies has a molar that grows strange, my vet files it down every couple of months without general anaesthetic. He is not sure why this happened, he was about 3 years old. When he needs a dental he has started to not chew on his left side. He has a strange peg tooth next to the molar which obviously gives him pain at times.
Can your vet prescribe a long term painkiller like Meloxicam. He may then start eating on both sides. Good luck hope you can get him sorted out x

He is allready on meloxydil but the pain is to strong and he stops eating completly. Problem is that molars overgrow in one week.

Has your vet checked for the presence of a root abscess?

How much meloxidyl is your piggy on (checked whether it is dog or cat strength) and how heavy is he?

Wondering if the vet could up his painkiller although that does sound like a good dose. Can he manage a bit of grass, or porridge oats and mashed pumpkin, would that help him to start eating. Unfortunately the forum member who has the most experience is not online this week, she is best to advise on medication dosages and advice on dental issues.

Please keep up with syringe feeding to try and maintain his weight, oats are good for weight gain mushed up with a little warm water x
