Hi sorry but i have to vent this ok here goes.....i was on yahoo answers in the pet section and some idiot asked and they were serious can hamsters live with guinea pigs because i wanna mix them up! i am flabbergasted at this question and ofcourse my reply wasn't to friendly. I can't believe anyone in their right mind would do this i also added doing so is inhumane and animal cruelty. some of the questions on that yahoo answers are terrible and shows how many out there have piggy's and have no idea how to look after them. anyway i can't believe that question rant over just wanna know how you all feel about this.

I have come to the opinion some people need to put in a cage with a bear and ask them to live with them!

i have hamsters and guinea pigs but no way would i allow them to be together for a start the hamsters would easily get out of a piggie cage.never mind the fact theyd fight each other

Well at least they asked, it could have been even worse! I once told a friend that you couldn't keep rabbits and guinea together because they breed and the hybrids don't tend to survive. I was being sarcastic but she believed me..... It's amazing how little some people know, I suppose we can never take common sense for granted!

Oh my god! :o

I have my pigs next to my hammy, who is up on a cabinet and even then I worry his nocturnal noises may startle them, are some people actually on this planet? :...

Did this nut intend on breeding the hammy with the guinea?!:)>>>
How could you even consider keeping them together, there completely different in how you keep them.
Some people really shouldn't be allowed to even keep animals, evidently he dosen't know anything about piggys or hammys

I quite fine the image funny actually, hamsters and guinea pigs in a boxing ring, the size difference is huge lol.

All thats very true but at least they asked and hopefully woll do right by the animals

remember the only dumb question is the one not asked
he may have just gone ahead and put them together

venice

A pair of my gerbils escaped their cage once and got through the bars of the guinea pig cage, they didn't take kindly to the Guinea Pigs and proceeded to bite them.

I'm terrified of hamsters, horrid bitey things (sorry everyone) no way would I let one near my pigs. As well as all the other obvious reasons. 'blushing' x

you may laugh but i know of a case where this actually happened and it wasnt a case of hearsay, i know the person it happend to, she was a vetinary nurse and took in guineas and rabbits, she took in a rabbit and guinea that lived together and seperated them but not long after the rabbit gave birth to hybrids which all died straight away, they were sort of deformed but not that badly as in you could tell what they were, its hard to believe but that is the one and only case i have ever heard of.

I think some people just lack common sense.
I don't even know what to say...I'm just stunned that someone would even need to ask such a question.

Sorry to go off topic of thread - but can this really happen? I never knew. Will explain this as another reason rabbits and guineas should not live together now!

Believe me i am not the sort of person to make up such a story if it wernt true and you have my word it is.

the person who told me about his rabbit and guinea pig was deadly serious as well!there was no other explanation for the rabbits pregnancy!!

According to a publication in 1911, crosses were made between the common rabbit and the guinea-pig and were exhibited in the Zoological Gardens of Sydney, New South Wales. There have been several claims of rabbit/cavy (guinea pig) crosses since then.

I googled it but didn't get much on it except the above!

I can't see how that could be possible. For one, they have a vastly different chromosome number, guinea pigs have a large diploid number of 64, whereas rabbits have only 44. In order for two gametes to fuse and produce a zygote they would ususally be the same chromosome number, to produce a viable embryo. In addition, their taxonomy is really not that close. They are both mammals and therefore members of Kingdom animalia, Phylum Chordata and Class mammalia, but beyond that they branch off.

As far as I am aware, hybrids between different species tend to occur between organisms that have at least the same Family, if not genus also, as in the case of horses and donkeys breeding to produce mules or hinnies.

Rabbits are members of the order lagomorpha, whereas guinea pigs are members of the order rodentia. Beyond this they branch further and further apart. Rhinoceros and horses are actually more closely related along this evolutionary line than rabbits and guinea pigs, and as far as I am aware this isn't the source of unicorns.... :)

I am sure this must be an urban myth.
