I received the following e-mail today and thought everybody should be made aware of what's happening in Europe. :'(

I am Tony Gallett from Nottingham, England.

I realise I cannot be allowed to join your group, but please would you
consider providing your group members with the following important
information as an Email or Text File. It informs them how a new European
Chemical Testing Policy called REACH will test 100,000 Chemicals on
millions of animals.

This is URGENT because Testing is about to start.

Considering the scale and cost of this policy there is very little
coverage in the media and the people need to be informed so those who
want to can take action.

When deciding if this message is suitable for your group, please realise
that REACH is the largest Animal Testing Project in History and we will
not see its like again.

RE: Europe to Test 100,000 Chemicals upon Millions of Animals

A new European Chemical Testing Policy called REACH has now been
finalised by the European Union.

Under these proposals Chemicals of every imaginable kind - from those
used in industrial processes to the ingredients of consumer products -
will be tested on millions of animals from mice to fish to dogs, causing
untold suffering.

Still worse, because of this reliance on outdated animal techniques,
reliable and relevant information will not be provided and our safety
will not be assured.

If you believe that REACH should make more use of Alternative Testing to
test 100,000 Chemicals that have been in general use since before 1985
then please take action now.

If you are a European citizen please contact your local papers and own
MEP asking them to promote the development of humane non-animal test
methods under the REACH legislation, which is the best hope we have for
sparing animals the misery of a testing laboratory.

A sample letter can be found at the BUAV (British Union for the
Abolition of Vivisection) website www.BUAV.org <http://www.buav.org/>

(Select Campaigns, Chemical Testing, Get Active then Writing to the
local press).

For all Non-European members, you can still help. Please tell all your
colleagues and friends in the UK and Europe about REACH. Write to your
own local papers to try and inform others about what is going on in
Europe.

More information on REACH can be obtained from

http://www.europarl.europa.eu <http://www.europarl.europa.eu/> . (search
on REACH)

WHY CAN'T THE GOVERNMENT MAKE ANIMAL TESTING ILLEGAL!

Is there any way we can start a campaign? Or something to help stop animal testing because animals have no say weather humans can test things on them! Which is damn mean, heartless and CRUEL!

What would you use to initially test new medicines? I don't agree with animal testing for cosmetic reasons but in some instances it is necessary. What exactly are the things going to be tested in this scheme? Fair enough if it's shampoo or something but what if it's a potential cure for cancer or diabetes or some other serious disease.

Test these sort of things on humans that are willing to do it! Thats the other resort!

I don't know the ins-and-outs but according to the message it's to test chemicals that have been in general use since pre 1985.

Suey :(

Is there a campaign out there to stop REACH, if so we could all sign the campaign and get loved ones and friends to sign it too! Every little helps towards saving these animals!

Sorry meant to quote Ali there about testing on humans instead.

There aren't many people willing to do that, this is one of the problems I have with this topic, people shouldn't campaign for it to stop unless they are willing to take the place of the animals themselves. Last year there was a big uproar because parents found out that nurofen for kids had not been tested on children, only adults. Unfortunately when they asked if anyone would like to volunteer their children to be used as a test subject, no one was willing.  They cannot complain about it if they aren't willing to be a part of the solution. I feel the same way about voting. If you don't vote then you can't complain about the government.

I would be willing to test the chemicals myself, ESPECIALLY since they have been in good use since 1985. Just because theres isn't enough willing humans our there doesn't give these people the right to kill, deform, damage innocent animals that have absolutely no say in what these humans are doing to them its morally wrong.

About the nurofen thing, I'm sure parents will not want their children being tested with a product that COULD be potentially dangerous, I certainly wouldn't, would you?

I agree that testing for the advancement of medicine is necessary although I don't particularly like the idea, however, this legislation appears to be purely for chemicals that have been in general use for over 20 years for e.g. household cleaners, beauty products etc. I'm reading through the documents on the links at the moment.

It's wrong! Specially since the chemicals have been around for 27years! Because they've been around for that long I'm sure ENOUGH people would be willing enough, including myself. (But I wouldn't drink the chemicals obviously).

Another reason they use animals as test subjects is so they don't have to pay them, because normally us humans like to be paid to allow people to test on us. It's wrong! Grrr! (As you can see I am very touching on this sort of thing! Getting pissed off even thinking about the testing on animals, so beware, Ali.. Is offically pissed off :'( :tickedoff:)

If there aren't enough willing humans out there, what should they test on instead? I agree that it's wrong in cosmetic cases but where is the alternative if there are not enough human subjects?

This topic always makes my head hurt, its a bit like how would you go about fixing the state of the country. You can see what's wrong but you can't seem to find a solution to it, all possible roads lead you right back to the beginning in one giant circle. xx0

I certainly wouldn't want to test anything potentially harmful on either myself or my future children but that is why I don't feel I have the right to demand we stop medical testing on animals. If I won't be part of the solution to the problem then I can't demand they fix it.

I was just searching the net on testings on animals etc etc as I want to know more about it
and I found this (before you click the site, it made me feel a little sick, theres nothing gory on there its just sick)

:'( POOR CATS! :'(:'( :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I can't believe theres actually people out there that would do this :tickedoff:

I don't really know how to comment on this subject, as no it is not right to test on animals but like it has been said what would they test on, bit of a tough subject. I agree it should only be for medical reasons. One opinion I have is if they have to test products on animals they should only test them on animals that haven't got long lifespans. Like I have said don't really know how to comment. :)

The tests they are going to do is on chemicals that we ave been using for the past 20 odd years but haven't been tested before. It looks like the BUAV and its European counterpart have had some success in reducing the amount of tests to be done on animals but there will still be thousands of animals made to suffer unnecessarily. Should this be so?
Suey
PS They don't call them guinea pigs for nothing!

The testing will probably go ahead whether we like it or not. I don't see how you could stop it. I wish there was another way to test these products. :-\ :'( :tickedoff:

Ironicly, that was just a "joke" to annoy animal rights protestors.

Edit:

The non vegetarian chocolate bars thingy just cameon the news, which reminded me to post this.
Alot of people scream murder at the thought of animal testing, but they go out and have a kebab after a night out/eat a lamb roast for dinner or drink milk, even. The animals used for dairy farming are treated worse than they would have been in a lab. My grandmother has cows and buffalo and they get oil massages every day and get fed the left overs (you would say they're pets, not used for milk) - the milk in supermarkets is NOTHING like that. Just seems a bit hypocritical to me.
I'm not against animal testing purely because it's been banned for cosmetics now, and it's expensive so only used when needed. Also, it saves peoples lifes. That's not a big plus for me because I'd feel a bond with a donkey half way across the world instead of for a person, but for some it is. I'm not going to say "it could save your eye sight, or something" because I know that won't affect some of you either.

I didn't realy understand the letter thing. I'll google more about it.

OMG do they test on guinea pigs? I am a vegetarian as i think it is mean to kill another living thing for food. Animal testing is even more mean as they are still alive while you are doing it to them :'(

I know, but alot of people have agreed with me that we wouldn't put it past some silly idiot to try it
PLUS they must have put cats in the jars to get the pictures

Yeah :( I know for a fact someone must have tried it. Hopefully resulting in the person having their eyes scratched out.

This kind of stuff makes me ashamed to be a part of the human race. Why dont we take convicted sex offenders and murderers and child molesters and experiment on them? Because it would be cruel and unusual punishment! What gives man kind the right to do these horrible things to gods creatures? >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

not sure if i have a right to post on this subject considering I'm not a regular member, but animal testing is something i feel strongly about. i would like to say to all those who think there is no alternative to animal testing, that most tests done on animals are not only cruel but pointless. ALL tests done on animals have to then go on to human trials anyway, not to mention the fact that a humans body is very different to that of a guinea pig, mouse, cat etc.there are plenty of organisations out there that dont feel the need to test on animals. see http://www.drhadwentrust.org.uk/ for more info about it all-it will explain things better then i ever could.

for those interested in using products that are NOT tested on animals do a google search for BUAV, they will provide a list of different companies that dont test on animals or use ingredients that have a fixed cut off date. i have been using Co-ops own brand for many years now-all cheap and excellent products!
