Hello everyone...

I am not very happy right now. My 'friend' who also has pigs, just told me that as two of her 10 week old babies haven't been sold, she is going to take them to the RSPCA rescue centre near here.

I say friend, but quite frankly I am ashamed to say I know her. She let her sow get pregnant intentionally because she wanted babies to sell. I only found all this out after being told she wanted rid of the little ones.

I know for a fact that like many/ all other rescue centres, the RSPCA centre near here is at bursting point. I am very tempted to take the babies off her myself first before I have nothing more to do with her!

What do you all think? Cinnamon's babies are now 5 day old wonderful, healthy, springy little buggers rolleyes... Cinnamon is happy and recovering from giving birth well and as she's in her "maternity apartment" as I call it, Coconut could do with some company...

I am waiting for some things to arrive to add at least another 2 DIY levels/ shelves to my cage anyway :{ so there will be a lot more running room in my new massive cage.

I am not sure if she's just saying this to me to get me to take them off her hands but quite frankly, I'd rather not take that chance. I've seen the babies before, tri colour shorthairs... one of which is very, very shy...

I want to help them but I am not sure if it's too much too fast ?/

I think if you have the space, time and funds to care for them then you should :) Also, I doubt the RSPCA will take them from her because I think I read somewhere that they aren't taking handed in animals at the moment because they don't have the space? That might not be true but I think I heard it somewhere.

Yep the RSPCA don't take in surrendered pets anymore.

This must be so distressing for you to be put in this situation. Stupid girlmalletheadmallethead

Are they girls then? I suppose if they fit in with your pigs then it wouldn't harm as long as you think they'd get on and you'd be able to cope with them. How many would you have then? xx

If you don't have space/money etc to keep them then perhaps you could take them in for a little while and try to rehome them yourself.

I'd echo the other post if you have the space/time/funds then go for it!:))

you can never have enough piggies! If I had the space etc I would have at least another 5!:))

Hi, thanks to all for the replies so far...

Having these two would bring the total up to 7.

Coconut, my boar/ neutered daddy-pig
Cinnamon, sow who gave birth to:
Marble, Toffee and Biscuit (all sows) 5 days ago.

I wasn't planning to reintroduce Cinnamon and her babies to Coconut until they are about 8 weeks old.

Her babies are sows as well so it would be 6 sows and Coconut rolleyes

I am about to call her and tell her to get her mother to bring them over. She told me that if I want them, her mum will bring them over straight away.

I dont have any trouble with the pigs I already have so, I think piggyme had a good idea. I am going to try my best to give them a forever home, but if this isnt possible, I'll rehome them myself. At least that way I know they'll go to a good family.

Who knows what would have happened when the RSPCA wouldn't take the babies from her. I didn't know they'd stopped taking them in either - then again, I have never and never would abandon an animal like her.

Now to think of names

Yes that sounds like a really great plan. And just think how Coconut will be with his hareem of 6 girlies to play with -c
Looking forward to pigtures, and well done for taking them on. I just hope this girl doesn't mate her pigs again. Totally irresponsible.:)>>>

Good luck xx

Thank you :)

They are on their way over now, I will take some pics when they get here in about 20-30 mins...

I don't think she'll mate them again, not that I can be sure but I had quite a long phone conversation with her mother about all this as I had to give her my address... She thought the pregnancy was an accident as well... oops! Oh well, if she's that uncaring about the babies, I couldn't care less if I got her in trouble!

Got a short-list of names :s

just read your post, i think its really sad that people just try to get rid of animals. your neva know when breeding that there might be some babys that dont sell straight away and need facilitating.

i think its great that your taking them on and your have to let us know when you got them and pics :)

Please remember to have an emergency fund, I have 6 pigs, and ok I admit it all my vet visits aren't necessary. Unfortunately I'd rather pay too be told I'm paranoid than too worry.

Bette however was very ill and she cost over £300, don't leave yourself in a situation, were your not able to come up with the money for vet bills. Plan ahead, I think sometimes people don't realise just how much pigs cost.

xx

Glad I have insurance on my pigs - well, Cinnamon's babies will be insured at 8 weeks old. Thats the minimum age. I'm going to add these new ones onto my policy tomorrow :)

Glad he's ok

You have pig insurance? What insurance company are they with and do they only cover, after you pay the first say "£100"?

I do indeed :)

Its "Exotic Direct" http://www.exoticdirect.co.uk/

You have to pay the first £50 and they pay up to £2000,00 a year vet's bills per policy after that on required treatment. You can't claim for stuff YOU want done, like when I had Coconut neutered but if something bad happens and the pig needs emergency treatment etc, that you can claim for. Like an emergency op or something...

Introducing the new additions to our Piggy population

Hello again,

The pigs just got here, very scared! Her mother put them in a box, not secured at all, they were probably sliding all over the place during the car-ride here. And she got lost so it took longer than it should have.

This is Sooty (who wiiiiieeks as soon as you attempt to go near her, never mind pick her up - I may need new ear drums). Sooty because she looks like she's stuck her head up a chimney rolleyes. She is terrified, I don't think they have been socialised at all mallethead poor little thing - going to have to take it very slow and patient with her. Already made a little progress though, I have been allowed to stroke her nose a couple of times and she's sniffed my hand a few times.

This is Brandy-Snap. Named because the pattern on her cheek reminds me of Brandy-Snaps for some reason. Still very nervous but not as terrified as Sooty. She is stroke-able but still backs away quickly and hides.

Here they are together, they are sisters so even if I didn't plan to keep them together, which I do, I would now that I have seen how much they reassure each other... Neither is half as scared with sis there.

They are scared enough as it is right now, They are in my 82c cage for the time being. I am going to start introductions tomorrow when everyone has calmed down a bit. Coconut was wiiiiieeking and jumping around when he heard them.

Night night all :)

Just to clarify this varies from branch to branch, we are still taking in surrended pets as well as strays. So you would need to check what your local branch are doing.
