Hi all, my new baby sow, Coco, came from the pet shop with a huge abscess on her neck, so I took her immediately to the vets (with the promise from the pet shop that they would foot the vets bills).

At the time, the vet thought there might be two separate abscesses, one on the skin surface and one more deep in the skin tissue, but she thought that the deeper one might actually be Coco's lymph glands being swollen due to the abscess/infection.

Anyway, the vet lanced the first abscess and put Coco onto antibiotics for a week. We went back last night for a check-up; the first abscess has cleared and healed completely, but I already knew that the second, deeper lump was another abscess....so poor old Coco had to have the second one lanced as well.

She's been through so much in her young life, poor little thing, and she has the nicest character ever - none of this pain and messing around has made her anti-humans at all, she's still as sweet and trusting as ever, bless her.

She's still on antibiotics for the next week, but she's gotten quite used to the twice daily medicine sessions now! The vet also said that I should keep the wound clean and 'flush it' with saline twice a day........but the wound has already closed up and started to heal (the vet only made a small slit in the skin). I tried to really dampen the wound this morning by holding a saline soaked cloth on it for about 5 minutes in the hope of softening the wound and re-opening it gently, but no joy, it stayed firmly closed.

It still feels a bit 'abscessy' to me, but the vet seems to thing that the 'lump' I can feel is the capsule of the abscess, and not pus.

Poor Coco, I suspect that this abscess may have to be surgically removed......my heart bleeds for her, it really does. :(

My guinea pig Snuggle had an abscess removed yesterday by surgery . Although I was a nervous wreck clock watching all day I am now kind of glad it was done under a general . Hopefully that way the abscess is all cleared out and then it is (hopefully) just recovery . Hope everything goes well !

Thanks for the vibes and best wishes, folks! Well, in my opinion, the lump seems to be getting slightly bigger, so i suspect that the vet didn't manage to properly drain it on Tuesday. I fear that she'll have to have a GA to get rid of this one. :(

I think the pet shop will rue the day that they agreed to foot her vet bills.....we're already over £50, and I honestly can't see a quick end to her treatment.

I shudder to think what they would have done to/with her had I taken their advice and returned her to the shop. :{

Thanks again, Tracey

Poor thing! One of my pigs had an abscess surgically removed under general anasthesia last summer after antibiotic therapy and lancing and draining it twice and rinsing with saline failed to clear it up. The capsule of the abscess was incredibly thick and it simply would not resolve. I was nervous about the anasthesia, but she came through it just fine and it was great just to have the whole thing resolved without more squeezing and flushing and repeat visits. Good luck with Coco- abscesses are no fun!

Thanks everyone - she is going through it, bless her, but she has the sweetest disposition ever! I was giving her a cuddle last night and she started purring, stretched out and started to snooze.....she's just adorable. x)

Hi furryfriends, she's on Baytril (the old favourite).....if this abscess doesn't respond to the treatment (and it doesn't look like it will, to be honest), I'll suggest to the vet that we try Zithromax. I suspect the next step, though, will be surgical intervention, but no doubt she'll need antibiotics after the op, so I'll see what the vet thinks.

She doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort though, she's leaping around the cage (when she and her cagemate, Darklis, get popcorning, the whole 3-storey cage rocks! :))), she's always climbing on top of things to get a good look at what's going on, and she's very vocal, wheeking and chirruping at the top of her lungs most of the time.

Thanks again for the vibes and good luck wishes, Tracey x

awwwwwwww what a little sweetie x)x)
All paws, fingers and claws crossed that she'll be ok soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is Humbug, she had just the same as your sow when I got her.. she had multiple abscesses within one main one.. it took 1 week for all the abscesses to clear.. they will go :)
The first picture illustrates just how big they got, makes her look like an older piggy.. the second shows just after lancing, note they cut into it at two points, as the lump was still there after first lancing..

Hi BonBon2010, Humbug is lovely! Thanks for the pictures, I'm glad she's all healed up now. Coco's abscesses are in a similar place, but you can't really see them too well as she's a fluff-ball!

There was pus draining from Coco's wound last night, and the abscess does actually seem to be shrinking a bit (or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part :{), so fingers crossed that the antibiotics are working.

If you can still do so, flush out the wound with warm salt water through a syringe, I did this with humbug, and it helps clear out the pus:)

Which antibiotic is Coco on? Zithromax is the very best one to use for abscesses.

Can I suggest you ring your vet and discuss the next step for Coco and whether they would be prepared to prescribe this antibiotic menotioned by FF.

If they "blow you off"...you need to find another vet...

I see you are W mids...can you get to see Simon Maddox at Cat and Rabbit in Dunston Northants? He is happy to prescribe zithromax off license to piggies and happy to talk to other vets (get your vet to ring him?)

If transport is a problem and you want to see Simon then please let us know.
