Another Hay Poke For Hettie

Last night I noticed Hettie's eye was half closed. I looked and saw a small piece of hay which I managed to remove.

This morning her eye is still a bit closed though doesn't look sore but I'm still taking her to the Vets this afternoon for a checkup.

She is so fluffy around her eyes that hay is continually getting stuck in it :(

Bless her, I hope her eye is feeling better soon.I posted a thread about my Guiseppes eye.It looks weepy and I'm thinking it could be a hay poke x
 
Oh the poor love. I don't think there's anything that can be done about preventing them. Hope her eye gets better soon x
 
Hope she gets on ok at the vets, well done on getting the hay out. They should give her some drops and check for damage. The drops usually work within a few days.
 
When Christian was about 7 days old he had hay poke. The vet gave him 2 sets of eye drops which I had to put in twice a day for 10 days. It was quite a challenge when he was that small to hold him, hold his eye open and pop the drops in then open and close his eye a few times for the drop to go in. Especially as the drop that came out of the bottle was larger than his eye! My son had to help. Once we thought we had put the 2nd drop in properly but hadn't and Christian stood in front of his Mum and made a tiny squeak as if to say 'look what they've done to me Mum' and Mum immediately licked the drop off of his eye. It was very sweet. Then of course I worried if the eye drop would do Mum any damage as they are not supposed to be ingested. But fortunately she was fine.
 
I'm glad she's okay @*kate* . They never learn do they?! My Podrick is always covered in hay but thankfully has only got it in his eye once. He did however give himself a nose bleed from poking a piece up his nose.

I think he needs a nose guard. Maybe Hettie should wear goggles when hay diving, silly sausage.
 
Hettie's eye is back to normal today! fully opened and not red or watery :)

Will still put the cream in twice a day for the five days though :)
 
Glad to hear Hettie's eye is looking better today.
I often look at my lot popcorning around in their hay trays and worry about their eyes.
But I guess if it wasn't that it would be something else.
How is Hettie with her cream? It sounds like it could be difficult if she isn't a fan of having her eye area touched.

Oh Hettie is brilliant, can do anything with her very easily. She's such a lovely girl :)
 
Great news ! So glad your prompt action helped her recover quick. I have noticed that we are seeing less & less severe eye problems & enucleations on here recently, down to forum members great advice & prompt attention. You are setting a fabulous example of an owner that puts their pet's best interests first Kate :)
