I will upload their "Pet Policy" later on - they definately don't fulfill the criteria of keeping their animals in clean enclosures.

There is not a chance that these enclosures would be big enough for 10 rabbits! That's just awful!

Oh my God thats awful!

Lazy swines (in fact I retract thats an insult to pigs)

We should just go in and remove them all. Ill take them!

Makes me so angry!

I can't begin to imagine how that must smell the poo outweighs the woodchip I've honestly never seen the like. We don't really have any independants round here that stock animals and our local P&H are very clean and have seperate pens for pigs and buns full of igloos toys food and hay

Oh My God that animal dander would do me in! That hasn't been cleaned in a good few weeks! Thats awful! So who are the Pet Care trust, I'm going to google them now!

I just googled them maybe you should send them these pics with details of the shop

thats disgusting, I'd like to have a few words with whoever said that was acceptable.
how would they feel if all the staff were locked in the bathroom together for 7 days, forced to live in their own filth. not happy, thats how. so why should the rabbits suffer this? :)>>>

I have sent an e-mail of complaint to the Chief Excutive of the Pet Care Trust with the pictures displayed above. Hopefully they will be able to see that as a Pet Care Trust they need to ensure that all of their members are abiding by their policies.

One of the standards in the policy is:

"Animal housing will be kept to a high standard of cleanliness at all times
"

Hmmmm - those pictures are not demonstrating a high standard of cleanliness

poor bunnies

OMG That is just awful :)>>> Is that poo or food in the food bowl?
i would say it is poop, i have just had breakfast but now feel sick, how could they do this to the poor bunnies?/?/?/ and what diseases have the bunnies got when bought by unassuming customers. that is so shocking, i agree unannounced checks on places who sell animals is an excellent idea but like everything it will cost money and require more staff that is what they say here. good for you ellie for writing a letter of complaint, hoping something is done for the bunnies and other animals.:)p
and as for 10 in a cage that is so totally stupid, 4 maybe 6 tops but even then that would be a squash. just can't believe it.:{:{:{

OMG that is absolutely disgusting :)>>>:)>>>........now i know why Debbie was soooo upset 8... the both of you must've come away from there very very distressed Ellie i'm so glad you and Debbie are going to report this lazy, rotten filthy inhumane persons (i think i cleaned that up pretty good then)
Those poor little buns living there, i bet they must all be so glad to go to their forever homes and get out of the filth and obviously no proper food either grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

poor things, good on you for reporting it to the pets care trust

Thats disgusting. What is so hard about cleaning out their cages?

We went into Pets at Home yesterday for some timothy hay - the cages were all cleab but the rabbits had no food left at all so we told one of the girls, it must have been like that for a while though as there was not one pellet left. I will check up on them again. :(

i have just read the pet care trust guinea pig information sheet and they donot give a minimum size for hutches or cages. so have sent an email asking why?

Hang on a minute though...

I have never heard of the pet care trust... as far as i know it is a charity that does not have any government standing when it comes to animal welfare guidelines...

The shop should be adhereing to the GOVERNMENTS welfare guidelines... The RSPCA are technically the only ones who can advise pet shops on how to keep their animals...
If the shop is saying they comply to a charities guidelines then anyone can set up a charity with stupid rules and keep their animals that way! There are set rules that are upheld by the proper channels...

A) you need to tell the shop keeper that and also tell him tha you have reported him to the RSPCA...

B) report him to the RSPCA... and send these photos to them...

Animal care act 2007?
and yes the shop should be following guidelines set by the licence issuer ie council!

Here is what I posted on the other horrible pet shop thread. All pet shops have to comply with the regulations set down in the Pet Animals Act 1951, not just local authority guidelines. There has been no secondary legislation come out (yet) to regulate pet shops under the Animal Welfare Act.

The RSPCA have no legal powers over pet shops, they can only advise. It's the local council who issue the licenses - they are the ones who can do something about it hence they should be contacted.

Anyway, here's my other post...

Pet shops here have to comply with the Pet Animals Act 1951 and the stocking density/dimensions are as follows...

animalspace.jpg

It says juvenile stock but for adult stock the dimensions must be doubled. It states this quite clearly in the act. They must comply with this to meet the conditions for a livestock license.

You'll get nowhere with the RSPCA - I would get on the phone to the council on Monday and demand something be done - they can shirk off a letter but not when you want to talk to them in person! Environmental health usually are the ones that issue the licences. Here are some other bits of ammo for you. All from the Pet Animals Act...

With regards to the health of the animals (particularly the one receiving treatment).

"All stock for sale must be in good health and free from obvious parasitic infestation as far as can be reasonably determined without veterinary inspection."

With regards to the food (or lack thereof)

"Animals must be supplied with adequate amounts of food and drink, appropriate to their needs, and at suitable intervals."

With regards to the state of cleanliness:

"Animals must at all times be kept in accommodation and environment suitable to their species with respect to situation, size, temperature, lighting, ventilation and cleanliness and not exposed to draughts. All accommodation must be kept in good repair."

I can't believe the Pet Care Trust would have stated those pens were fine. I'd be tempted to send them the photos and a picture of the sign. The last thing that charity would want is for them to be linked with a place keeping animals in those conditions. They don't inspect the premises of their members, to the best of my knowledge, anyone can join.

I contacted them sending them the pictures. I spoke about how disgusted I was with the state of the pens, especially after their policy states that animals will be kept in a high standard of cleanliness at all times. I also mentioned about the pen size saying under no circumstances should 10 rabbits be cramped together in one of them.

I do agree that in most cases getting the RSPCA to help is like getting blood out of a stone but they are the first port of call for any animal cases...

The RSPCA do have authority to take the pet shop to court and to sort things out with the council... They have to go through certain channels but they they will first advise then if nothing has been done they will go further... Without getting into the ins and outs which are full of red tape etc... They do have power in these cases... I worked with an RSPCA inspector for a few months and saw what they could and couldnt do...

I like so many on here am sickened by those photos. Well done to Ellie and her mum (sorry dont know your name) for taking action against it.
