Hello everyone, quick post before I head off to the vet again.

It was only the day before yesterday that we lost gentle Brandy-Snap after a sudden trip to the vet was needed. We don't know what happened. One day she was fine and then she was suddenly ill. The vet tried to help her but she had to be PTS. She was buried yesterday - for all details see threads in "Health and Illness" and "Rainbow Bridge".

Well today, I go to feed everyone and noticed that Rasher, my eldest pig, isn't at the bars as usual, wheeking for his lunch (OH feeds them breakfast before leaving for work). He was in one of the pigloos. I took the lid off and he did come out to and ask for some food but he moved very slowly, didn't seem very steady walking, his breathing seems shallow and slow and he can eat but tiny bits at a time and very slowly as well.

I took him out and checked him over. When he's picked up he seems to snap out of it and wriggle and everything but when you put him down he is the same again - he's also got his eyes half shut (like he's falling asleep).

I am off to take him to the vet now. I just hope this isn't some contagious or zoonotic thing. He is the eldest (nearly 3), as I say, but he was absolutely fine before today so I don't understand what's going on! I've given him some critical care with a spoon and he seemed desperate to eat it up, I had to get more and give him two servings!

I don't want to lose any more of them! Rasher has had problems in the past (they found and removed a lump on his shoulder whilst he was under GA being neutered), so I just hope they can help him.

Saying all that, he seems to have picked up a bit now. He's moving around the carrier, but I'm taking him anyway.

Will update later.

Update

Back from vets with Rasher and allotment (to get more piggy food) .

The vet saw us and has given me enough Baytril until Tuesday when she wants to see him again - if there is no improvement, they will investigate further - she wants to check his teeth and send some blood away but didn't want to do anything with him being so frail.

He was also given a painkiller and oh my did he perk up quick after that! So the vet thinks it's probably not the same as whatever took Brandy-Snap from us and is something treatable. She found a polyp in his left ear (no idea how I missed that!) and I did say when he was neutered, the vet phoned me asking if I wanted a lump they found on his shoulder removed (which it was)... so he's had issues before.

Unfortunately, I don't know his history before we got him and the person we got him from didn't know his history from before she got him either (he was already 18 months old). But the vet said he's obviously well cared for and after having a good look at him, feeling his belly etc etc etc, she said she thinks its probably something he's had for a long time and it's started to get on top of him because he's an older piggy and his health actually improved after we'd acquired him.

I am also to carry on giving him critical care as well and she wants me to keep him separate just in case he has anything that may be passed on to the others, just as a precaution.

Sooo... I built him a little C+C lined with vet bedding, gave him a brand spanking new wood chew, his own water bottle, a soft toy for company as well as a big pile of veg cut into small pieces to make it easier for him. His cage is next to me, on top of the printer, where I sit on the sofa.

He's had his medicine and I think he must be feeling better as the veg has ALL been scoffed already (big improvement to this afternoon)! He's had a little drink too and is chewing things... he still doesn't look very well though so I don't think he's out of the woods yet but I am optimistic.

update

I don't even know how to begin writing this. We were hopeful after taking Rasher to the vet yesterday that he would pull through. OH said he was ok when he left for work this morning and I had to go to the doctor surgery to have my wound redressed. When I came back, Rasher was on his side, struggling to breathe. I texted OH and told him and left work and got a taxi home to take us to the vet. I got Rash in the carrier and went to feed the others while I waited and saw Caramel lying there. She was fine yesterday and this morning and now we will be burying them both tomorrow as nothing else could be done for Rasher. He, like Brandy-Snap was now just suffering with no hope and had to be PTS. I also noticed that. Coconut looked ill so we took him to the vet as well - they are keeping him in over the weekend and will investigate on Monday when he will hopefully, be a bit stronger. We have no idea what is going on! They have advised us to keep poor Jellybean who has now lost her mum Caramel and her dad Rasher separate in case there is something she may pass on to the others. I just feel numb at the moment... I'm on my iPod writing this as the Internet is also down, so I will write Rasher and Caramel's Rainbow Bridge thread when it starts working again as I want to post their tribute pictures on the thread.

Please wish my dear Coconut luck and I hopefully won't lose another child/ piggy.

Thank you to everyone for your kindness and support, it is very much appreciated.

X

Oh my god this is just awful. I am so sorry. I cannot believe it. It sounds like they have caught something. I cannot imagine the hell and pain you are going through. If you ever want to talk then please pm me.
