Hi folks, I lost a boar to cancer in December, it was really aggressive and the lump/mass grew very quickly. One lump had been removed in August but it came back. This took me to three boars.

On Saturday, another of my boys, an Abyssinian, crossed the rainbow bridge. He’d lost a lot of weight and at the vets on Saturday morning, the vet said he had an enlarged kidney. He was lethargic and had a bald patch near his rump. On Saturday evening he gave up his fight, having not responded to syringe feeding or the steroid/anti inflammatory injection the vet gave him. He was three.

Today, my little boy Ozzy went in to have an abscess removed from his face/neck area. It was a success but the next 24 hour seems are obviously crucial, so please cross fingers. He seems to be gradually coming back to his lively self this evening.

And now... I have discovered a roughy pea-sized lump on my other remaining guinea pig, Ziggy. He’s four and weighs in at 960g (he’s always been a smaller pig, but has developed an appetite recently, so am hoping he’ll fatten up a bit!) There is a little bald patch where the lump is. It’s on his rump. It hasn’t grown or changed in a couple of days. Any thoughts on what It could be?

Hello, so sorry to hear of the loss of your piggy on Saturday, please feel free to leave a memorial to them on our rainbow bridge section.

Sending lots of healing vibes to little Ozzy also.

Unfortunately impossible to say what Ziggy's lump could be so a vet check is in order. Could be a cyst could be something more sinister so needs checking out, sorry you are going through a tough time.

Thank you so much. Ozzy is doing well, phew! I think it could be a cyst on Ziggy, and will certainly be getting it checked out.

Hi, as said above only a visit to the vet will be able to establish what it is but from my experience small lumps on the rump are usually cysts. cancer in piggies is not common so fingers crossed it will not be anything sinister.

So sorry you are going through this worrying time with your piggies.

So sorry that you lost 2 of your boars. Hope Ozzy makes a speedy recovery, and that the lump on Ziggy turns out to be something benign. Best let the vet check it for you and out your mind at ease.

Thanks everyone. As Ozzy has to go back for a post-op check up later this week, I’ll arrange for Ziggy to be seen at the same time. Guinea pigs, eh? They’re darlings but heart breakers at the same time x
