Another Pets At Home Shocker!

I can't believe they were that stupid! The staff shouldn't be allowed near the animals if they don't know how to look after them (I applied to work there once years ago and got told it would be months before I did anything other than shelf stocking etc so this is even more baffling!)

@Rosehip - I got two girls from P@H and after two weeks the one of them died of a heart problem that was in her genetics! I'll never get over losing her. The vet I took her to when she was ill said she'd come from bad stock and probably a rodent farm! He said he's seen so many guinea pigs from that store that had bad genes it was unbelievable. Stupidly I went back there to get a sister for my one remaining pig and when we got home I found she had a wound on her lip! I got her to the vet and luckily it cleared up and healed, the other girl I got originally and the new edition love one another and seem to be fine now at least but the lack of care of the people at pets at home has caused me a lot of pain, not to mention the stress and pain to the animals. I'll never get a guinea pig from them again! I shouldn't have in the first place but the other animals I've had from there have all been fine. I'm sorry you had a similar experience, it's horrible.

Sorry, rant over!

@Julsie - :)) I can just imagine the look on your girl's face when she realized it was straw and not hay! I'd be in trouble with my little ones for weeks if I did that!

@TrekkerPiggies - yep, it's inbreeding and a roan bloodline that has done this to our girls. Lettie has escaped the cysts, but is neurologically impaired, so that's obviously not ideal! I'll never buy anything from them again if I can help it! x

It really isn't idea at all, I wish they would get their animals from responsible sources, it would solve most if not all of the problems they have there. I won't be buying an animal from them again at the very lest.

On phone so can't write long reply. The p@h I went to were and still are awesome! I'm sick of seeing places slated on here. You realise you can be accused of slander

First off slander is only if accusations are false. Some people do live near poor stores - all highstreet retail companies have stores that aren't up to scratch, where training isn't up to high standards of other stores, where staff knowledge isn't up to scratch, where generally cleanliness isn't up to scratch, etc. To be upset by their personal experiences and share them is not slander, it is personal opinion formed by the stores they have experienced.

Secondly a number of people have said about their local stores being good - in store. The problems are that they use breeder mills, that are worse than puppy farms and they label their cages as suitable for animals that they are not (I.e a 4ft cage suitable for a rabbit - minimum welfare standard is 6ftx2ft by 2ft high). These are facts and as such the complete opposite of slander.

Slander is a spoken statement according to my dictionary. Libel is the written form: the act of printing a statement about somebody that is not true and that gives people a bad opinion of them.

I'm sure the admins are monitoring the opinions expressed to ensure they don't have to deal with a libel action.

@Kerrie74 libel actions can be costly to defend. No forum owner wants to be in that position.

if you'd seen this horrible company on watchdog a while back, you'd know they really don't seem to care at all. but they will carry on as long as people continue to support what they are doing by spending money there :(

I'm not stupid, I do know it can costs a lot.

The admins do keep an eye on threads/post and will warn people when things get out of hand, trust me, I know this from personal experience lol.

@biscandmatt I'm not sure if your post is directed at me, but I've never seen watchdog or this pet store. I'm only following the posts on this thread. But I believe that dialogue can bring about change.

it wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just a general post :)

people have had the same complaints about this company for a very long time now. they don't seem to care what is said about them or seem to do much to change unfortunately. i guess they don't have to because people continue to shop there, so they have no reason to do anything differently. so many pets from there are ill, are pregnant, and miss-sexed. they offer to exchange ill pets like they are a faulty product rather than a living being. or have them treated at their own vets who at most stores won't be piggy-savvy so the care they receive won't be the best. i don't even want to think about what happens to the 'returned' animals or those they can't sell.

the whole idea of a supermarket for live animals is just odd to me in general. you can't run a business like this without something having to give, and it seems very clearly to be the animal welfare and not their profit sadly.

it seems that many people don't make the connection that their money spent in the few and far between better stores still gets used to fund the not so good stores and the 'stock' they buy from these animal farms.

anyway, these threads have appeared for years and probably will for a long time yet, so i'll leave my opinions there i think. needless to say, they get no business from me :)

The ethos of the forum has always been and will always be to educate rather than dictate. Until legislation in the care and welfare of guinea pigs becomes law large organisations will continue to exploit the needs and welfare of guinea pigs. It's true some local stores are better than others but until there is a change at corporate level very little can be done. Giving an owner a refund or replacement for a small animal or agreeing to pay vet bills isn't a solution it is only a pacifier. Only when these organisations embrace the true welfare of small animals will real progress be made. We fully understand the frustration this causes. Unfortunately or fortunately this forum is generally preaching to the converted.

I've been in touch with two different P@H's before, once about a concern about the lack of knowledge of a staff member who was selling rodents to a customer who was honest about the fact they didn't know anything about the animal and was relyong the staff member for information, another time about a product that was dangerous. Both times I have been unimpressed with the way that they reacted to my concerns. I do not buy from them unless unavoidable (e.g. travel, as I don't drive). I do not want my money to go towards what is, at the very LEAST, irresponsible breeding and selling practices of animals.

Just saying that the animals that get a bit older and don't sell are put into their adoption area I think for half the price they would be sold for as an adoption fee
