Looking to extend the cage next year to either 2x5 or 2 and half x 5 ... I may even be able to stretch to a 2x6.... throwing away some furniture... who needs it anyway? But I have the piggy bug & I really want to add to my 2 girls. Just one more.... is 2x5 big enough? Would it be better to wait until I could make it even bigger. I also really don’t want to upset the bond that they have, am I just being selfish? Is it better for them, or me. Will they benefit more from a new friend or more space just the two of them. I really wish they could talk to me

A 2x5 is big enough for three sows. As always though, bigger is always better!
Whether you add is entirely up to you. It’s always a risk adding more piggies, you never know whether the bond will work. I would say though that even numbers would be probably be better in the long run. With three piggies, there is a chance that one could get left out. There are plenty with three who work fine though, so it’s not ruling three out entirely, it’s just consideration.

Have you considered getting them a neutered husboar? 2 sows and a husboar can be quite a stable bond and boys are funny, they bring a whole new set of piggy behaviours into your life!

We have just bonded our two girls with a neutered boar and they seem really happy as a trio. It is lovely to seem them doing things together and Georgie shares his affections with both of them. Although Peggy is still top pig and woe betide any other piggy who tries to sleep on top of her castle.

Oh I really do love the idea of a husboar  it’s just a scary thought cause I don’t know wether they wil like it & I don’t want to upset them.

Aww, did you rescue the husboar? I’m not sure how to go about it.

Rescuing an already neutered boar from a centre would be easier.
If you are to buy a boar, then you would need to keep him separate for six weeks after he had been neutered. And given his age, he may not be able to be neutered immediately

I don’t think I would feel comfortable or have the experience to get him neutered, I would definitely want to go through a rescue.

Yes, Georgie was already neutered. The girls took to him right away. Peggy made sure he knew his place and he seems quite happy not being top pig.

I think some rescues routinely neuter boars and others don't.

Neutering is a fairly simple operation if you use a Cavy savvy vet who does this operation regularly. We had our skinny pig Ginger neutered and he recovered really well. Although, like all operations it does have risks.

I had my 2 boars neutered to live with their 3 wifelets (NOT recommended at all to have more than 1 boar with living with sows but somehow mine have worked out the living arrangements!) and boars are very lovable and it's fun to watch their antics. I think boars are much more interesting than sows. The care of them can be a bit unpleasant thought especially their boar bits!:vom:

Thank you everyone, I wanted 2 boys originally, but knew they needed more space and at the time I just didn’t have the space, so I went for girls (which I don’t regret because I love them:love:) so I really like the idea of getting a neutered boar.
I think I will start throwing away furniture and if I can make space for a 2x6 I will start contacting rescues to look for a little husboar for them (and me):yahoo:
