My six and a half year old boar Rupert has another bladder stone I think.
I've woken up to him very unwell looking, won't touch food and although had him out for a while on the bed he hasn't peed.
Seemed fine yest.

We're booked in as emergency at my local vets for 10.15.
They've sent his notes over from Cat and Rabbit as he's been there in the past with one, the previous one was operated on by my local vet as couldn't wee and was an emergency also.

The problem is he can't handle anaesthetic, he reacted very badly the last time with Simon and that was just for X-rays. He said he's not a good candidate for surgery, now he's even older.

I'm heartbroken. Hoping the vets say he'll be ok with antibiotics and metacam but obviously won't be able to handle an op.

Should I take his cagemate Jess or leave her at home? Don't want to upset her if I won't be bringing him back :(

Yep it's my boy from thread a few days ago cuddling Jess :(

Aw, do hope every goes ok for little Rupert and sending you big hugs. Got all my fingers crossed for Rupert x

Thanks @Bill & Ted, gutted to be honest he looks so poorly. That really bad piggy look when they're really not well.
Have a horrible feeling this isn't going to be a good trip :( x

He's just passed this. Was thinking it was wee but I've just seen some come from his nose. Sounding wheezy now.

Had the bloody painter here yest and some of the stuff smelt toxic. Had windows open/doors closed but hope not because of that.

Jess and him waiting in box for taxi, fingers crossed he does ok.

Thank you, we're just back from vets and thankfully he's perked up a little bit, well moving a bit now which he wasn't earlier.

Couldn't see anything in his mouth/nose and couldn't really hear anything although I did hear the wheeze earlier.
She couldn't feel problems with his bladder, although he was a bit 'swollen' (which is why I panicked about a stone) said he felt a bit bloated but the more he was manipulated the more he pooed everywhere and his tummy looked less swollen. Quite wet poos but normal size. He's down to 915g (after lots of poos) when he weighed 960g 9 days ago, will keep a close eye.

So we're treating for a URI, he's had an injection today because they couldn't find the septrin in stock (wasn't charged for injection and I'm picking it up tomorrow as been ordered) but he'll be starting that tomoz. He's got/had metacam.
Was going to give him ranitidine but because he's passing poos we're going to leave it for now and I'll ring in if feel he needs it.

God what a nightmare morning! I'm just about to get some CC ready and give him a feed, not sure when he last ate properly but had veg at 9pm and seemed fine, was scoffing hay all day and night but obv not today.

My poor old boy! Thank god Ped's eating better, got a feeling going to be a busy girl for a while! Fingers crossed he improves, he looked terrible earlier and terrified me when not up at side of cage like he is every morn. Just laying there with his puffed up face and sad eyes :(

Oh, let’s hope he picks up now, poor little man, as if you haven’t had enough on with Pedro. luckily he’s on the up, dreadful how quick they can go down hill. At least he’s on some meds and hopefully will perk up now x

Not too impressed with CC! Looking perky, then his little front legs can't cope and he has to have a lay down bless him.
All snuggled back in the cage with Jess now, only had 8mls which took a while and he's had a bit of a belly massage (a few poos passed) but will give him peace for a few hrs now.

Forget he's such an old man, he acts like a baby sometimes and is so happy it's a shock when something like that happens! Shouldn't have cursed myself talking about the loved up couple on my piggy valentines thread! Piggies! xx

Yes I will with his next feed, thanks @Jaycey. Know they can hate the stuff at full flavour! Normally tend to 50/50 with pellets and CC but as he'd turned down all veg this morn (even carrots and cucumber!) and was passing strange liquids thought I'd give him the full whack of vitamins!

I'm sick of the smell myself, used to love it, been around far too much in my house in the last few months!

I know, it has the smell of poorliness nowadays!
Pedro hates it and Rupert's obv having flashbacks to a couple of years ago so doesn't want it within an inch of him either! It's good for you, really! :)

Just wondering, not an expert in piggy digestion, could his poo (slightly strange colour and wetness) just be because he has lay around for hours? The more he was manipulated, he moved etc the more he passed.

I was up at 6.30, he looked like he'd been there a while. No poos with me on the bed for half an hour. Got moved around for a little while with me and then at vets prodded and poked and poo output like normal (constant!) Could his (rather old) digestive system be causing trouble just because of illness, or is this because he is getting to the end of his life? Or just the illness kicking in?
Was fine yest morning as had a cuddle and then had veg before painter got here. So gutted I might have missed something.

Don’t blame yourself, you’ve noticed quickly, and gone straight to the vets. I wonder if he’s had an (air lock) in his gut that’s stopped the pooping, does sound like digestive to me. Fingers crossed he picks up now. C9me on Ruper you gorgeous boy, we are all rooting for you x

On no! You're having such a tough time at the moment. Sending massive healing vibes for lovely Rupert.
Come on little man you can do it.xx

Yes this is the piggy I thought was going to pass away 13hrs ago!

Can't believe it, he's walking around, eating carrot and cucumber and was eagerly taking syringes of food a little while ago. He's like a completely different pig! Was so poorly this morning I'm shocked at the turnaround! He looks less bloated too.

Something's obviously happened as he was so poorly, no idea what but just happy that he's got his face shoved in a pile of hay atm!

Thanks @Bill & Ted and @rhymer xx

Thanks @Sophie Blane and @eileen x

I'm wondering if he might have got a bit of hay stuck somewhere (up nose etc) with all the fluids coming from his nose earlier and funny noises. So maybe put him completely off food and started a bit of bloat?!
Very strange whatever it was and he was having a very tough time with it!

Hopefully he'll still look and feel as good tomorrow :)

Aw poor boy and poor you! Glad he's perked up a bit, piggy illnesses happen so fast- well done for getting straight on with the critical care feeding, you're clearly a pro with all these naughty rodents causing all these health scares! X

Thanks @Sophie Blane and @eileen x

It's definitely possible. If he's struggling to breathe he could have inhaled a bit more air than usual and started the bloat, which in turn pigs him off eating. I've had it happen with one of my foster pigs

Thanks everyone :)
Yes will definitely be on guard for a while now @Wiebke!

Thanks @Jaycey, really can't think of anything else it could be with all the brown liquid that was dropping out of his nose bless him. Was so well the night before, totally out of the blue and he's never had anything similar (well not since 10months old when I adopted him anyway).
Strange stuff but pleased he's looking so much better.

Him and Jess having a bit of bed and veg time before I go out, looking great and normal looking belly!
Was a little quiet for him when I got up but they are the noisiest pigs in the world! :)

Maybe the brown liquid wad a nugget got stuck or a poo? Unsusual! But maybe possible? I dont know much about the e.n.t of guinea pigs.
