Good morning.

Dilly's loud breathing was an infection after all, so she is on antibiotics.

This morning I noticed she had some hay in her eye. Her eye has gone cloudy, and is watering.

I got the hay out. Does she need to see an emergency vet or can it wait till after Christmas? I'm not sure if my vet is open tomorrow. Their voicemail, Facebook and website doesn't say :td:

Of course I will take her if needed, I just hate how they charge so much for 'out of hours'. An animal can't help when it needs a vet!

Thanks in advance
Jo

Sorry to hear about her eye . This won't wait until after Christmas - the sooner she is seen by a vet , the better .

You need a vet and eye drops asap. It cannot wait until after Christmas as the eye is very delicate and she could end up losing it if untreated. Have you tried looking at pets at home vets? Some are open on Sundays and as it's not an unusual problem you might find the charge more reasonable

I was going to suggest the same @Lady Kelly. My Vets4Pets inside Pets at Home is open when the shop is open and don't charge ludicrous Out of Hours charges for weekends either.

It’s a definite veterinary emergency I’m afraid. Eye injuries need urgent attention. And the above suggestions are great.

I agree that a vet visit is needed. I'm lucky that I have 3 pets at home local to me and their vets all open on a Sunday. My own vets are open as normal tomorrow and are opening for two hours on Boxing day and New years day for emergencies

As others have said I would too see a vet, better to be safe than sorry! And lady Kelly mentioned PAH vet, I can confirm they are open on Sundays and do not charge any extra than the rest of the days, I believe it's just shorter opening times (think 10-4 at the one I use)

Hope all goes well!

The last time my pig had hay in her eye the vet got a horrible big bit of hay out that was stuck, checked again and then got anther bit out. It made me think it really is better for a vet to do that check.
Good luck.

When Meg had hay poke a few weeks ago I managed to get an inch and a half bit of hay out of her eye :yikes: before going to the vets! Luckily the vet couldn't find any more in there!

I’ve just finished dealing with haypoke in Jemimah’s eye.
The quicker it’s treated the better.
Let us know how you get on

Betsy how did you do it? When I saw the vet do it, it looked bleugh eyeball rolling stuff. But yes so painful good to get out asap.

Tom held onto Meg and I just pulled the hay out gently. I had to do it so her eye didn't get any more damaged. It's a case of having to do it so you do!

I hope you got the situation fixed by a vet, and that your little friend is on the mend! It seems like a lot of people have experience with hay poke! Am I just really lucky that I've never had it with any of my pigs? *touch wood* 😱

Dealing with haypoke at the moment, definitely needs immediate treatment. Sending healing vibes xx
