This time its for a couple of sows. They came to me yesterday and are nearly 3 yrs old. They are both big at over 1.2kgs each, abby crosses and are not eating much. They are drinking too.

They are both producing large balls of sticky poo, not even remotely pellet shaped! They are so messy on their bums, I gave them baths when they arrived yesterday but over night they have gotten messy again!

Any advice on what it could be?

First three I suspect for that kind of poop is parasitic, fungal, or dietary. Other causes are of course possible, but I would consider those three first. I have to note that if it was proper diarrhoea I would be more concerned and would of course consider other possibilities first.

Plan of action if I'd taken on the pigs would be:

- Worm them with Ivomec and Panacur;
- Get fluids into them - ideally a rehydration solution like Dioralyte given orally, though if they are drinking very well themselves you may be able to just monitor their fluid intake;
- Get them onto a good diet. Tons of hay so they can forage as well as be more encouraged to eat it. High quality dry food, and a Vitamin C supplement.

I would avoid veggies until their tummies are settled, no grass either as they may not be used to it.

Obviously if they're really not eating much at all they'll need syringe-feeding.

A probiotic could be given as well to help balance the gut flora, although my priorities would be those listed above. :)

'Bio-lapis' or 'Lacto-B' are good probiotics
Still waiting on this fibrevore recovery paste to try out which is supposed to have prebiotics in. rolleyes
